About this deal

While some thought it brilliant, others thought it ridiculous, so it’s probably little surprise that a few years after the TSW show ended, the Americans ended up doing their own version. Gus manifested during the latter days of the Westward franchise, continued throughout the TSW years, and was finally put out to pasture before the handover to the wretched Westcountry in the early nineties. However, Gus's Magic Birthdays series and his career at the station were ended at the start of 1993, when Westcountry Television took over from TSW after winning the franchise. The Lockyer Tavern back bar became a safe space for gay men in the middle of the 20th century, particularly during a time period when homosexuality was criminalised. With Gus, the announcer would read out a birthday card and the puppet would give a jump, known as a bunny hop, for each year of the child's life.

They married on July 31, 1959 in Chapel Street Methodist Church, Penzance, and the reception was held at The Hotel Royale. The Derry’s Cross Studios in the heart of Plymouth was the home of Westward and TSW from 1961 until 1992 before Westcountry Television took over at the beginning of 1993 from a studio at Langage Science Park in Plympton.Backed by the Church of England and the House of Lords, the Sexual Offences Act partially legalised same-sex acts in the UK between men over the age of 21 conducted in private.
