Like most of the other, newer flavours, at 226 this bar has a few more calories than the older range. This one had a strong protein-like aftertaste, which for the regular protein consumer is not so bad, but for the uninitiated, it was quite strong. The chocolate is rich, but it strikes just the right balance so as to not detract from the real star – the salted caramel. It’s certainly not a full-on peanut flavour, but it is enough to blend well with the chocolate and the peanut chunks add some extra flavour and crunch. Don’t get us wrong – there are some excellent-tasting protein chocolate bars on the market (mmmmmm, markets), but a compromise must be made between carb content and taste.

I find most fake sugars disgusting, so a lot of low carb high protein snacks are pretty grim, but these taste great and also have small slightly crunchy bits to add texture. Aside from being the devil’s food, Grenade Bars are a protein-packed, low-carb snack from the masters of sports nutrition – Grenade. Yes, protein bars have been available in supermarkets, but they are normally tucked away in a dark corner with energy bars and sports gels. I like the slight saltiness, both from the base and the caramel layer, which goes really nicely with the sweetness (It reminds me a little of the saltiness in Oreo cookies!

Texture-wise, it’s pretty similar to the other Grenade bar flavours, except the creme offers a smoother, creamier, texture than Grenade’s usual caramel layer and the Oreo pieces are less crunchy than the crispies found on the likes of Caramel Chaos and Jaffa Quake. They should not be used as a substitute for a balanced diet and it is not recommended to consume more than two shakes per day.
