About this deal

Funnybones, is a fantastic children’s story book which is still used in literacy sessions in the classroom. One memorable event in the book is when the dog ends up in a heap of bones after accidentally bumping into a tree. Janet Ahlberg died of breast cancer in 1994, at the age of fifty, having produced many beloved and bestselling books. In English lessons for example, children can learn to appreciate the use of rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeia, punctuation, speech and simple sentences.

Big skeleton and little skeleton enjoy a push on the swings and they throw a stick for dog skeleton. The skeletons venture out of their cellar one night to find someone to scare, but everyone is in bed, so they amuse themselves by scaring each other and playing with the skeleton animals that live in the zoo.

I think that this book could be used to introduce a new sience topic, such as the human body to a young student. Allan Ahlberg has published over 100 children's books and with his late wife Janet, created many award-winning children's picture books. Funnybones (Welsh: Y Sgerbyde) is a Welsh-British children's television comedy series, which originally aired on S4C in Wales, and on BBC One with BBC Two showing repeats elsewhere in the United Kingdom from 29 September to 15 December 1992. But after Big and Little could not find a perfect pet as the goldfish, the parrot, the hippopotamus and a family of rabbits caused nothing but problems, they decided to finally swap the family of rabbits back for Dog. As the skeletons sing a song about different bones being connected, it would make a nice link to KS1 Science learning about the bones in the body. This first and original, Funnybones has become a classic, with many further books in the series to follow about the "Funnybones" family. There's also a short and simple rhyme about the ways in which the bones are connected which could be used as a basic introduction to the body.

The Ahlbergs' books are nursery bookshelf standards and have been the recipient of worldwide acclaim and awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal. Allan Ahlberg has published over 100 children's books and with his late wife Janet, created such award-winning children's picture books, including Peepo! Due to its cross curricular features of literacy and science, it’s definitely a core literacy text which I’d use in the classroom. Skeleton Crew is one of the titles in Allan Ahlberg's iconic children's picture book series about skeletons, Funnybones. It would appeal to children in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) classes as well as children in Key Stage 1 (KS1).

The Funnybones books are a must for children just starting to learn to read – these funny skeletons are definitely not the scary sort! As the night draws on, they come to the conclusion that everyone’s in bed so they decide to scare one another! All twelve episodes were originally shown on BBC One and repeated on BBC Two as part of the Children's BBC strand, as it was known before 1999, on Tuesdays at 4:00pm.During the initial stages of their adventure, they do not find anyone to scare so ‘play on the swings’, play with other skeletal animals in the zoo and throw a stick for their dog.
