Alice in Wonderland—a book about living in a world where nothing makes sense made perfect sense to me. There are also long stories with characters, and although the story is supposed to end with some number, all the words block my path to getting there. Well, you sit alone and we sit alone—but together, too—so I thought that we could all sit alone together. I personally am taking nothing from anything raised here and funds will be dispersed directly to associated band and crew members who have been struggling financially this year with little or no work outside the live music industry.

But the above all having been and necessarily said, I have still very heartily enjoyed reading Fish in a Tree and have found much of the presented narrative both engaging and entertaining (and also often heartbreaking and saddening). J. Palacio's Wonder and Harriet Johnson's Accidents of Nature, as well as more fantastical settings, as in Lois Lowry's Gathering Blue or Holly Black's The Iron Trial.

When she's nervous she rolls a carved wooden block around in her hands, and she's often anxious when Shay bullies others. As a teacher I have a hard time believing that this girl made it all the way to sixth grade with no one seeing that she can't read.

Like getting this certificate is going to make me pat myself on the back and, somehow, transforminto a different person. So, when she took a piece of cake out of her lunch box, I reached over, sunk my fingernails through the frosting, grabbed a hunk, and stuffed it in my mouth. Melody could think, and that was a powerful moment in the book because the author perfectly discussed the issue that we are facing with people seeing others only for their disability and not for who they are as a whole.

And then I decide that the craziest, strangest, most unbelievable thing I could ever draw is me doing something right. When the immigrants came to America through Ellis Island, they would sometimes get ice creamfor a treat. Fish in a Tree is proud to be raising neurodiversity visibility and acceptance in New Orleans, and to share our commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and accessible spaces where everyone is valued for their unique strengths and perspectives. I miss how he’d move from place to place with us whenever Dad got stationed somewhere new or deployed.
