About this deal

But she is also the daughter of Lord Colin Spenser, who vanished 26 years earlier after becoming the prime suspect in a brutal attack on Claire’s mother and nanny. After one binge she is walking home in the early hours of the morning when she witnesses an assault. Clinton Heylin has written eight books about Bob Dylan during the past 30 years, including the acclaimed 1991 biography Behind the Shades (which he updated in 2001 and 2011), making it seem unlikely he’d ever have anything new to say on the subject.

I’d have to let the office agree to let me quote unpublished lyrics, which is a whole work in and of itself, of a big scale. Working on a local paper in Camden Isobel is a journalist who feels responsible for the death of her friend Jess in a road accident. Charlotte Philby has pedigree when writing thrillers and espionage, with her family history linking her to Kim Philby. While the characters are all unlikable and the 2 parallel stories are linked by the thinnest of threads, I was hoping the story would all come together at the end.

True, he didn’t keep Agnes Lewes in the attic as Rochester did with Bertha, his purportedly mad Creole bride; rather Agnes, after having had three sons by Lewes, betrayed him and went on to have four more children with his friend Thornton Hunt. Perhaps it was for the best that Eliot’s most lovably untamed heroine, Maggie Tulliver of The Mill on the Floss, turns down two suitors and then drowns in a flood instead of joining that procession. We don’t get to hear much from Agnes, though what she thought about marriage and adultery would have been interesting reading. Now I will have to mention the ending…ONE MORE PAGE…EVEN ONE MORE SENTENCE and I would have felt less disturbed, less shouting of WTF! It is hard to overstate just how assured this novel is as Philby delivers a masterclass in plotting and I would recommend it to readers who appreciate a character-driven crime novel with depth.

Double Life review The Marriage Question: George Eliot’s Double Life review

I would’ve liked the two women’s lives to have become entwined earlier, as for most part, it was like reading two novels in one. As soon as they got to Berlin in 1854, Lewes encouraged Eliot to translate Spinoza’s Ethics from the Latin.

After all the thick tomes by Fyodors and Leos and Ivans, here we have a slim tale authored by a woman, and that alone should alert us that our old expectations may need to be altered.
