Gillian Cross is one of the best children's novelists today and her stories of the Demon Headmaster are both fun and quite frightening. She won the Carnegie Medal for Wolf, the Smarties Prize and the Whitbread Children’s Novel Award for The Great Elephant Chase; and the Little Rebels Award for After Tomorrow. It is the first of a series of books based on Dinah's war with the headmaster of her school, who uses his powers of hypnotism to try to take over the whole country through television.

As she settles in, Dinah finds herself saying and doing things she can’t control and seeks to uncover the secret to the headmaster’s influence with the help of her SPLAT (Society for the Protection of Our Lives Against Them) team.The Demon Headmaster' also includes themes such as fitting in, making friends, foster care and different families which relates to PSHE. Pada periode 1980-an hingga 1990-an, penerbit Dian Rakyat banyak mengalihbahasakan novel menarik untuk anak/pra-remaja, termasuk karyanya Gillian Cross. Most of the books in the series were read by Judy Bennett, although Facing the Demon Headmaster was read by Kelly Hunter and not Judy Bennett.
