At its Computex 2019 keynote in May, Dell unveiled the second generation of its affordable G3 15 series gaming laptop, and I was there to give it a try. You may be wondering why you’d want to pay for a 120Hz screen, though, if the laptop can’t push frame rates that high. The keys have a bit of feedback, but the action is on the mushy side at the end of a press, and you may feel some flex on the keyboard deck. Unless you cancel, you will be charged the then current regular membership rate when the promotional period ends.
Between the G3, G5, and G7, there are a nearly endless variety of options of GPUs and storage options. The Dell G3, with its 56 watt-hour battery, performed honorably for what it is and makes an improvement on the previous iteration. In all honesty, it kind of looks like what would happen to a regular gaming mouse if you dropped it from three stories up and it fell apart. The biggest letdown on last year’s G3 15 was the dim, inaccurate display, so I’m really hoping this year’s model has a much-improved panel. As for the screen, you’re looking at a 1,920 x 1,080 IPS display with a matte finish, so you can comfortably game in bright environments. It’s slower than the competition on two of these tests, though none is exactly ready to churn through media editing or creation. To stress the machine, we ran Metro Exodus on a loop for ten rooms at Normal presets, which is largely 1080p with medium settings. It’s slimmer and lighter than last year and now boasts an “S-Curve” tapered edge design, with larger ports sitting towards the back.Nonetheless, I am happy to rate the laptop an eight in this review for its capability to multitask considerably well. Everything still looked decent when playing the likes of Civilization VI and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, although pixel purists will most likely want to plug this machine into an external monitor. Far Cry 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider are both modern, high-fidelity titles with built-in benchmarks that illustrate how a system handles real-world gameplay at various settings.
