David Bowie - Low (45th Anniversary) | Banquet Records

Bowie was living in Berlin during this period but only "Heroes" was completely recorded in Berlin (Lodger was recorded in Montreux and New York and most of Low was recorded at the Chateau d'Herouville in France and then completed in Berlin). From 1972 onwards Bowie was a major pop star but one fuelled by the marginal and esoteric strands of music and culture.

Note that the written by credits on the labels use the artists full names (David Bowie, George Murray, Brian Eno) and on the credit insert uses surnames only (Bowie, Murray, Eno). In 2001 Bowie said “I phoned Dinger [sic] from France in the first few days of recording” Low, rather than “Heroes”. To be anything to do with rock and roll and to go and live in Los Angeles is I think just heading for disaster. We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. Some copies included a sticker with the tracklisting applied either to the shrink wrap or to the rear cover. I love the album, so I've been bouncing back and forth between all three copies all night just for my own pleasure, but it's a no brainer. I’ve read some complaints online about “boosted bass” of this remaster but to me it’s just very present, and gives the kick drum some extra oomph, as well. The UK first edition ( David Bowie - Low) has a cover that uses a modified version of the US cover - the catalogue present in the top RH front corner of the US cover has been masked over (artifacts are visible); the fan club insert of the UK edition uses a different font where catalogue numbers differ from the US numbers. David Bowie – Low (1977, Vinyl) - Discogs

I got confused by Bowie naming him “Michael Dinger” (a conflation of Michael Rother and Klaus Dinger), and obviously interpreted it wrongly. Bowie never went quite this far out again, not even on the excellent follow up "Heroes", but the extraordinary thing is that he had the imagination, and indeed courage, to make an album as creative, and also as challenging to the expectations of his audience, as this one at all. Low saw Bowie reuniting with producer Tony Visconti, and was the singer’s first of several collaborations with ambient music pioneer Brian Eno.Although he had been living in Los Angeles since March 1975, he was increasingly looking back across the Atlantic, and had become intrigued by the experimental, mostly instrumental music of German acts such as Kraftwerk, Can, Neu! Low draws on the German electronic bands of the period and New York Minimalism but is equally indebted to funk and disco (both Bowie and Eno were quick to spot the importance of disco at a time when their less open-minded, not to mention cloth-eared rock contemporaries we're dismissing it as commercial garbage). The songs on side one might be about alienation, psychic withdrawal and loneliness, but they are also possessed of a febrile energy, sweeping synthetic strings, a jaw-dropping, revolutionary drum sound and sheer funkiness. Bowie’s drug use had deepened since 1974’s Diamond Dogs, but his darkest times were while living in Los Angeles. And it's more likely to make people just shrug their shoulders and say "meh, I don't see what's so great or ground-breaking about this album".
