About this deal

I became obsessed with the history behind hauntings and why ghost stories and legends persist over time. I remember being incredibly frustrated and disappointed when we came up against this expectation that we not continue on into academics. Playing dead didn't serve the opossum well, so maybe it's time for Agnes to start thinking for herself.

I was attracted by the entertaining writing style, the inclusion of both documented fact and folklore, and biographies of historical characters. Curiosity's story is still told in a straightforward, nonfictional manner -- the personification wasn't done for entertainment value but instead to help keep the narrative relatable and focused. Although leaders might say they value inquisitive minds, in reality most stifle curiosity, fearing it will increase risk and inefficiency. Flexner questioned narrow approaches that forced academics to answer utilitarian questions, rather than sail into unknown waters. His basic contention is that curiosity is what has driven scientific and cultural advancement, and that that this powerful impulse in humans may be under threat by the Internet and certain ill-founded educational philosophies. It is well written and has a chatty style, and the organization and simple analysis, in and of itself, helped me to see slightly different angles of the subject than I had before. The sequential structure of the book is also accessible to young readers and provides a detailed history of the creation. Afterwords several planners and shipbuilders involved admitted to having had questions about the ship safety that they didn’t raise in front of colleagues for fear of appearing foolish. The Rough Guide to Unexplained Phenomena is an exploration of the zone that lies between the known and the unknown, a shadowy territory that's home to the lake monsters, combusting people, teleporting frogs and man-eating trees.

Several books, like superforecasting, indicate that collecting information is relevant but the way you precesses it is key. I really like it when it expands my sense of possibility, and whets my appetite to go deeper (epistemic-me). That will be enough to redeem myself from the guilt of the past, I reckon, considering how the questions have changed since my children were toddlers. Not only paranormal and cryptids are featured but, history and unique locations of interest are exhumed. They explore which dimensions lead to the best outcomes and generate particular benefits in work and life. And all this still manages to stay within the realm of understanding of a young elementary-aged child. But at the very moment when the rewards of curiosity have never been higher, it is misunderstood and undervalued, and increasingly practised only by a cognitive elite.

If you love the strange and unusual in Michigan, this book is a wonderful addition to your book self for all ages. It shows the problem of hyperspecialization at the intellectual level: taking ONE idea and using all data to justify it. The story begins by sharing the creation of Curiosity to answering questions such as: How did she get her name?I like to make stories, draw pictures, and build miniature environments for stop motion animated films.

This book is about Curiosity, but it's largely about science in general -- about questions and answers and why we send all these robots into space to begin with. It’s less, ‘here are all the answers,’” Zurn says of the book, “but rather an invitation to the reader to come along on the journey with us. However, one of the most important lessons we can teach our children is to be curious and keep on discovering.

Does he really suppose as many people flocked to their libraries as the number of people who just look stuff up on their phones or laptops? The way this book has been written allows children to ask further questions about space and encourage a fascination in science.
