Woodworking - there will always be slight gaps between wood when fitting skirting boards and other pieces of trim. Check the data sheet for the paint you are using to see if the paint manufacturer recommends a certain caulk or advise against certain practices. If you’re caulking concrete, either to fill a crack or to seal it around the edge, you can make the caulk almost invisible. When drying, the caulk will shrink, which can lead to the paint film being compromised due to the movement. I normally stretch out a piece about 80cm long at a time and press firmly against the edge between skirting board and carpet. Traditional caulking (also spelled calking) on wooden vessels uses fibers of cotton and oakum ( hemp) soaked in pine tar.They can also be applied to boards with no tongues or grooves as you apply the sealant to the edge of the board and build it up until it fills the gap. Assuming you aren't lifting up your carpet, I'd suggest you run a broad strip of masking tape as close to your skirting boards as you can without them touching the wood. The joint will sand down and look very similar to the board surface but because of the PVA content, will not stain in the same way. A general use primer like Zinsser BIN is perfect of this, helping to create an adhesive layer for the paint to stick to on application and remain adhered to long-term. Doing this means it's less likely to pull off your new paint when it's being removed but as the masking tape will contain wet paint, you need to be extra careful not to get it on the flooring! Due to it’s springy nature and "V" shape it will naturally spring outwards and fill the entire width of the gap and hold itself in place. If you have dark floorboards and use a light wood for the strips then they will stand out even if you stain the boards and the joints afterwards so this is something to be aware of, but if done carefully can give a fantastic effect. Secure the skirting in your workbench and use a coping saw to cut away the waste section of your mitre cut. Caulk is a flexible waterproof sealant and is the ideal filler for small gaps that appear around door frames, windows frame and skirting boards. A full A4 size sheet should be enough for the doors, skirting board and window sill of a 4m x 4m room.
Remember that when you’re planning to fit new skirting, start from the left-hand side of the door and work anti-clockwise around the room. Typical uses will include caulking the gaps between the top edge of skirting boards and walls, gaps around window and door frames, and cracks in the corners of walls.
Caulk will seal up any gaps, is waterproof and can be painted over; while silicone is very similar it has slightly different qualities.
