Readers know Stephanie Garber for her bestselling Caraval trilogy, which follows two sisters who run away from home to participate in a spectacular multi-day treasure hunt; we named Garber a Flying Start back in spring 2017 for her debut work. Tella and Julian have planned to lure Scarlett out, take her to the isle, and stage a kidnapping so Governor Dragna doesn’t get angry with them. There's a passionate kiss that turns into a near-strangulation from a man controlled by a curse, and the main character, Evangeline, dressed only in a slip, writhes in a bed, fighting new-vampire urges to drink blood, with a man lying on top of her, holding her down. Other mature content includes some drinking by Evangeline, the 17-year-old main character, and scenes of kissing and groping.
Suddenly, I was able to focus again, and as I was revising this book, I also started on the sequel, and I wrote about half the sequel before I even finished the first book. Donatella is ecstatic about the news, and so is the handsome man Scarlett catches her with in the cellar, Julian. And for Scarlett and her beloved sister Tella it represents freedom and an escape from their ruthless, abusive father. The main character clings to hope and kindness amid many cruelties towards her and even when all evidence points to betrayal she offers forgiveness easily.
So if you’re hesitant to dive into a series again after reading Finale, The Night Circuswon’t drag you into another long-term commitment. I don’t actually know how the story ends, so I don’t know if it’s a standalone, I don’t know if it’s a series, but I just feel so passionately about this book. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner. Scarlett rushes to find Tella and share the news of Master Legend’s reply, but when she stumbles on her sister, she is with a boy, Julian, in the cellar. The fourth clue leads Scarlett to drink a magical cider that turns her vision black-and-white, except for the clues she truly needs to see. Jacks, a handsome immortal, is one of the strongest voices trying to persuade her to open the door, and he's a voice she doesn't quite trust.
