About this deal

In a reversal of my usual practice, I began watching this PBS series via Netflix last year, then decided to read the book it was based on. I know some readers took exception with a vividly described scene of a young girl's induction into prostitution. Jennifer was working at a maternity home near Hampstead in the 1960s when she took in a lodger, Philip Worth.

I have very clear memories of Cynthia,” says Suzannah, “because she was my godmother and my mother made a point of keeping in close contact with her. She uses these systems to disseminate social aspects such as competition, cooperation, domination, and equality. On 11 February 2013, Ben Stephenson, BBC Controller for Drama, announced that he had commissioned a 2013 Christmas special, and a third series of eight episodes to be broadcast in 2014. Following an emotional Season 3 finale, actress Jessica Raine's beloved protagonist left her job as a midwife in London to pursue a career in a Marie Curie cancer hospice. As the chasm appeared to widen, though, Jennifer became closer to Christine’s daughter, Joanna, “and I realized I was jealous.translating into three million viewers – 50 per cent above PBS's primetime average for the 2011–12 series.

BBC Worldwide also sold the programme to SVT (Sweden); NRK (Norway); RÚV (Iceland); Yle (Finland); AXN White (Spain; Portugal); ERT (Greece); [23] [24] ABC in Australia and TVNZ 1 in New Zealand, where its debut recorded a 35% share of the audience – 20% above average. The sisters knew something was wrong as soon as they were dropped off at home in Buckinghamshire, by an aunt, after the seaside break. Raine most recently starred with Peter Capaldi in Prime Video's The Devil's Hour, portraying insomniac mother and social worker Lucy Chambers, who finds herself in the middle of a serial murder investigation when her emotionally detached son becomes a target. Jennifer Worth’s first book in The Midwife Trilogy, The Midwife, has since been adapted for the screen.

Two areas which are explored much more deeply and disturbingly in the book are prostitutes and workhouses. The voices of much loved, familiar characters spoke loud and clear, particularly that of Fred the boiler man, who features extensively in this joyful collection. Watching the progress of Jenny Lee (played by Jessica Raine) as she learns about life in the slums of postwar Poplar has, say the sisters, been a uniquely moving experience.
