Faulks developed the novel to bring more public awareness to the experience of war remembered by WWI veterans. Each bird has a double page with illustrations and facts including where they are found, what they eat, where they nest and a ‘Did you know’. Bent, agonized shapes loomed in multitudes on the churned earth, limping and dragging back to reclaim their life.
