About this deal

Book features an illustration of a mother cuddling her toddler to sleep instead of nursing them at night (bed-sharing). I thought some of the book might have had an effect on him, but I did not expect such an immediate and magical change.

He still asked for it occasionally but whenever he did we reminded him of how we had let it go and there were no complaints, no pleading, no tears. Even though we’re not officially weaning yet, he’s fascinated by the idea that the toddler in Booby Moon doesn’t need milk anymore, and I can see it’s a first step towards laying the foundations.

Studies show the practice of ritual during times of loss alleviates grief, makes us feel closer to our families and helps us to say goodbye. Born to Korean and American parents in the latter half of the 20th century, moving around the United States several times before he was 18, Bobby Moon has always considered himself somewhat of an outcast.

I am still in a bit of disbelief about how well it worked, while being respectful of him and making it a celebration at the same time. It helped us through something I was very apprehensive about, and made the experience something positive for my son. I bought a couple of weaning books for Lily, then decided that I wasn't quite ready to wean her yet. While our feeds had dropped to one or two a day, refusing him was very difficult and dropping feeds was always a drawn out process. The concept was created in 2020 by a breastfeeding mother who was ready to wean but could not find a children's book on the market that offered her toddler an upside to their impending loss.

The ritual aspect of the Booby Moon process helps mother and toddler find an easeful acceptance for Booby Milk going away – with the child seeing the magic leave with their own eyes. His first full length solo recording Private Message, is now available on the Selfish Recordings label. I implemented a number of the suggestions in the back of the book to make the process more magical for him and easier for us. The night of my son's last breastfeed we did a special cake and a celebration and reminded him that we were saying goodbye to booby. Maybe we’ll have a party and release a magical balloon; maybe we’ll just talk about how he doesn’t need milk anymore, “Like the toddler in Booby Moon! This is a beautifully illustrated book about weaning which helps your little ones prepare to move off of breast milk and onto food. In the same way that the Tooth Fairy makes children happy about their teeth falling out, looking forward to seeing Booby-milk-magic fly away to Booby Moon can give the same wondrous joy to a weaning toddler.

As Reid points out, you can tweak the details to suit your family – for example, changing ‘booby milk’ to whatever term you use or carrying out the ritual after a special ‘Milkday’ party if your child’s birthday isn’t the right time. Booby Moon is special because it has a magical element that appeals to the child and also sets up a beautiful ritual to complete the breastfeeding journey.

The story also brings comfort post weaning, offering reassurance that the relationship continues; you can still wave up to Booby Moon and Mumma will still be here to offer love, cuddles and comfort. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. It is beautifully written and illustrated and really touches on the intense bond that breastfeeding fosters and how hard that can be to give up, for both mum and child. It explains that the moon sends down magical booby milk for babies to drink, and that the time will soon come to send that magic back to the moon, so that new babies can have milk, too. When I first read Booby Moon, I loved the tone and the idea but wondered if the mythological aspect would be right for me when it came time to wean my almost two-year-old. The back section of Booby Moon contains kind, insightful guidance for using the book to facilitate weaning.
