About this deal

Whether you enjoying bird watching or wildlife photography or just being in nature, this book provides a useful examination for how these quiet interests can bolster and support your mental and emotional wellbeing. The development edit led to some sweeping changes in the way I'd formulated the book, but thanks to Simon, the editor, it reads so much more smoothly than it did. Each exercise programme is tailored to the individual person, but programmes take, in general, thirty minutes to complete. As we go through life, we all suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune at some time or another.

Bird Therapy, by Joe Harkness | The Wildlife Trusts

Joe is currently writing an educational book titled Inside/Outside, which will be published in 2023 by Routledge. I always allude back to the dunnock, often overlooked as a drab bird and labelled as a ‘little brown job’. Next time you see one, inspect its markings and colourations and I guarantee that you will be pleasantly surprised by its understated beauty. He has written features for numerous publications, including: The Guardian, Condé Nast Traveller, BBC Wildlife Magazine, iNews, Birdwatch Magazine and Birdwatching Magazine. I feel privileged to live and have grown up in the beautiful county of Norfolk, a birdwatching mecca, where reedbeds and grazing marshes are my inspiration.Fans of Richard Mabey’s popular book, Nature Cure, and Kate Bradbury’s lovely and often introspective The Bumblebee Flies Anyway, will find much to ponder in this memoir. The feel of the fresh air against your face is refreshing, and add to this the smell of fresh earth after an April shower and the multi-sensory experience is complete. Hence, patient’s completing treatment are provided with opportunities to pass through ‘normal’ developmental milestones of infantile development, revisiting critical stages of brain development, removing barriers to learning, and enabling developmental progression/rehabilitation.

The therapy programme - B.I.R.D

Treatment comprises a programme of specialised, neurodevelopmental movement patterns, designed to stimulate neurological feedback to the brain, promote neurological integration, reduce dysfunctions and encourage maturation within the Central Nervous System. On days where visibility is impaired by cloud, mist, rain or fog, some landmarks used as direction aids in the route descriptions may not be visible. There’s actually a whole chapter in the book about birdwatching in winter and the wonder of roving nomadic flocks in the cold months. I’ve been writing about Bird Therapy for three years now and in 2017 I had articles published in Birdwatch magazine and The Curlew. Neurological dysfunction is reassessed at three monthly intervals, and exercise programmes are modified accordingly.
