Our Shining Cliff Original Gin is made from 13 botanicals, which we vapour distill to capture all of the delicate flavours.From here the couple invested in a small gin still that could produce six-litre batches and McLean’s Gin was officially born.

The bottle have a blue bottom which you actually can’t see if you look straight to the bottle but from an angle the azure blue bottom transforms the whole bottle. Colin and Jess McLean developed their passion for gin making after receiving a ‘Make Your Own Gin’ kit one Christmas. As a leading visitor destination in the Outer Hebrides we strive to bring others closer to this special place and inspire them to visit. Betty’ is our 600 litre spirits still, used to make our award-winning Shining Cliff Gin and our Derbyshire Cask Aged Rum.The very classic botanicals are distilled in small copperstill “The Dottach” where Isle of Harris Distillers LTD. In 2024 we plan to double-down on this commitment to our community with an exciting new initiative, so watch this space. Because the sugar kelp is such an unusual botanical, the gin was developed at the International Center for Brewing and Distilling at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh where they could experiment and adjust until they had the right amount and combination with the other botanicals.

Luke and Betty Kenny were 17th century charcoal burners who lived and plied their craft in Shining Cliff Woods. With their first gin successfully produced, bottled, labelled and wax sealed, the couple decided to put the time they had spent experimenting with botanicals to good use and have since created a number of unique expressions.SHINING CLIFF GIN The inspiration for our Shining Cliff Gin lies right behind our Distillery – the ancient woodland of Shining Cliff Woods – from the botanicals we’ve chosen to the bottle design. As well as creating jobs, we work hard to tell our island's story and encourage people to connect with our island. Premium Gins and Liqueurs, handmade by a small team of artisan distillers in Britain, for the whole world to savour and enjoy. Personally I would have liked some more of the maritime scent and flavors that makes this gin unique and therefor I can’t give it top score even though this gin is one of my favorite gins. From distilling and blending, to marketing and hospitality - there are a wide variety of skillsets and development opportunities available to local people as we create two beautiful Outer Hebridean spirits and bring them to the world.

The population of the Isle of Harris has declined by almost 50% over the last 50 years as young people leave to seek work far from our shores. On the nose, there are intense aromas of cherry and juniper, with rich notes of cherry and almond on the palate, which compliment perfectly to give a classic Bakewell flavour. We regularly offer placements and internships for young people to help them explore potential career paths, and we've developed our current distilling team through formal apprenticeships and training.
