About this deal

Historical evidence, such as the genocidal round-ups in the Iberian peninsula in the 16th century and the horrifying brutality during the Nazi era, are contrasted with examples of how individual warmth, humanity and discretion could subvert policy decrees and the intent of rulers to create a monolithic nation state.

My grandmother fled post WWII Germany fifty years ago and settled in New Hampshire, without her family, after half of Europe’s Romani population was extinguished in the Holocaust. It’s more than cultural enrichment; it’s necessary representation to educate outsiders, to connect the disconnected, and to voice the unheard. Based on real life accounts, these short stories feature British Gypsies, Irish Travellers, East European Roma; and people whose Romani background has remained under wraps. Now, I have to add the disclaimer that I don't know for sure what the real truth is, and I don't know either the author or the ex-boyfriend, but I am inclined to believe the latter's version of the story.

I’ve never known anyone who is Roma, but aspects of the Roma in his book reminded me of people I knew growing up in south Brooklyn: recovering (and not) drug addicts and alcoholics, scrappy kids, tough-as-nails people tenaciously proud of their background – even if they don’t quite have all the facts straight. Walsh's earliest interview was for BBC Radio 4's The Choice with Michael Buerk where he spoke about his life and what brought him to have to leave his culture. but it also makes sense that he would do this to prevent people from doing the proper fact-checking and figuring out that what he wrote wasn't true. Coming from a community in which guarding tradition and secrets was a way of life, he knew that once he'd left, he could never go back. This makes it independent of national categories, and can create problems with the writing sometimes, since literature tends to invite the imagination of the reader to settle it in a particular space.

The trope of 'travelling' as a key characteristic of GTR people is so common as to lead to a frequent presumption that Gypsies or Travellers who no longer 'travel' have lost their ethnic and social identity. Through Gypsy eyes, the protagonists are for once not immediately branded as different, weird or foreign. A useful film describing the purpose and significance of International Roma Language Day, celebrated worldwide on 5th November. Cécile Kovacshazy does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

Maggie's books, including 'Rabbit Stew and a Penny or Two' recount the 'old ways' and Romani Gypsy life and culture at the dawn of the 21st Century. When he finally becomes a teenager, he becomes more alienated in the Gypsy community when he discovers he is gay. Fantastic resource produced by Travellers Times which includes ideas for lessons, an assembly script and culture pack for teachers.

A resource designed to support all those working in the Catholic educational sector to help challenge the stigmas faced by Gypsy, Roma and Traveller pupils and their wider communities. Esta narración en primera persona adentra al lector en un mundo (de campamentos de caravanas, boxeo sin guantes y cultura endogámica) bastante cerrado, cumpliendo así una labor antropológica muy interesante que se suma a su valor literario. His job has been to tell his own story, but in doing that he's told a story about a little-known community and way of life and also about what it can be like to grow up gay. Walsh is the first to say that his childhood was not typical of every Gypsy experience, but he's also almost shockingly honest about how hard it was. Ostensibly a colourful memoir about growing up as a Romany Gypsy, it rapidly devolves into All Abuse, All the Time.

I was a little surprised by his description at the end of how peaceful the Romanies are, given the descriptions in the book. Tiny gestures but to a boy struggling to find a place in the world, lifelines that would help him to survive. Either way, most are secret-keepers, hiding their heritage for fear of losing their jobs, rights, and safety.

And we know that systemic racism takes its toll on literacy rates too, which are very low among Roma and Travellers world-wide. Why the moon travels is a haunting collection of twenty tales rooted in the oral tradition of the Irish Traveller community. If you read books about abusive childhoods then it has plenty of material for you but I would caution you to look into the veracity of it - if that matters to you - since you will find very different accounts by those portrayed in the book on the web and, at the very least, I suspect some exaggeration. As a Gypsy Mikey is expected to be able to fight at a young age, when he fails to do this, he is beaten by his dad pretty much everyday.Mikey however didn't match his tough, sadistic father's ideals, and soon his young life was one torment after another. The manuscript annotation suggests that the author of the account is Maxie Lane, author and sculptor.
