About this deal

The Lord of the Rings concept art, particularly the work of Alan Lee and John Howe, has had a significant impact on the fantasy art genre as a whole.

It's mostly full of half-finished scribbles and sketches drawn by Tolkien, a lot of which were more of a look into his thought process as he wrote than actual pieces of artwork he intended for others to see. Given the visual was a key way Tolkien conceived and played out his mythology (sometimes using the visual to work out ideas) this volume is an important part of Tolkien scholarship and one that I will be referring to again and again (I am currently working through the three versions of The King's Letter Hammond and Scull provide in Tengwar). John Howe (born August 21, 1957) is a Canadian book illustrator and conceptual designer, best-known for his artwork of J.

Hammond and Christina Scull Tolkien scholarship has been given three incredible resources that show how important a part the visual played in Tolkien's world-building. I applaud Wayne Hammond and Christine Scull for their excellent work on another volume that offers much exploration and study. John Howe Lord of the Rings, as well as the talent of Alan Lee, collaborated to produce exceptional Lord of the Rings concept art that was published by Gary Russel. Throughout his first years in Europe, Howe was taking in as much as he could in the way of art, architecture and everything that was "simultaneously ancient and novel. For The Hobbit films, original director Guillermo del Toro and replacement director Peter Jackson consulted with both Howe and fellow conceptual artist Alan Lee to ensure continuity of design.

Among the illustrations 101 are previously unpublished, and 42 are published in colour for the first time. A marvelous book containing artwork by Tolkien that he produced to aid him in the writing of the book, The Lord of the Rings.Tolkien’s various creative writing and design moments, better grasping the amount of detail, reflection, and expression put into the conception of his complex epic fantasy world. In 1976 he received his Master of Arts in Library Science degree from the School of Library Science of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and from that year has been Assistant Librarian in the Chapin Library (rare books and manuscripts) at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. If this sounds interesting then you will appreciate this oversized volume that looks into the mind of Tolkein and his notes on developing the greatest work of modern fantasy around. Hammond and Christina Scull, two of the world’s leading Tolkien scholars, have edited the book and provide an expert introduction and comments.
