Chocolate notes and plenty of pepper give the palate some punch, as the body meanders its way into a more traditional composition of golden raisins, perfume, and heady incense on the lengthy finish. There’s citrus, apple and marzipan on the nose and plenty of toasted bread with a hint of wood, a touch of allspice and a satisfyingly long finish.Armagnac is a grape brandy that is produced in the Armagnac region of the French province of Gascony. The sweet and slightly jammy raisin and fig flavours continue on the palate with vanilla, spices, and oak. As with Cognac, Armagnac began to assume something like its present form in the 17th and 18th century when merchants discovered the effects of ageing in oak on the local spirit. TheMontesquiou family’s rootsin the Gascony region in France date back to the year 1040, when the area’s famous Armagnac brandy was first distilled for medicinal purposes (yeah, right… that old excuse). Distilled in 2003 and bottled in 2016 as a 13 YO, the Armagnac offers up powerful floral and fruity notes, along with honey, almond, hazelnut and anise/licorice.

Clés Des Ducs VSOP Vieil Armagnac is a blend of Armagnacs that have been left to age for a minimum of four years in new light oak casks.The main difference between Armagnac and other spirits is that, due to its relatively low alcoholic content, it is generally not diluted with water. Traditional, small-scale, and truly “ craft”, armagnac may not have the bling factor of cognac, but this characterful and French brandy is as rich in flavour as it is in history.
