About this deal

If like me you enjoy Stacey Dooley’s documentaries then you’ll enjoy the style of her writing and this book, I liked the focus on the mental health crisis, even though I was aware of a lot of the issues, it’s still an eye opening and quite upsetting read at points, using input from people with mental health issues and professionals, this book is a great insight and important read. She is also an author and speaker who is passionate about spreading the message that healthy people make healthy relationships. Unfortunately, the church as a whole has only recently started accepting therapy as a valid path to wholeness; many Christians don’t understand that you can’t just pray away your pain, or anxiety, or depression.

While that knowledge is somewhat terrifying, it’s also comforting because it removes blame from the person with the illness. and his dad, best known as Spandau Ballet’s bassist and for his role in EastEnders, gave him serious bragging rights throughout his childhood. This is a great book for a younger, more contemporary audience, addressing issues they'd be more in tune with. To mother Shirlie, he made the agonising confession that he’d come close to jumping in front of a train two years ago. It’s also appropriate for people who need to feel a little less alone in the world with their illness, to know there are people out there going through the same things as they are.Amidst the shock, loss and confusion, Roman bravely made a moving BBC3 documentary about the alarming rates of suicide amongst young males. After all, one third of people who’ve lost someone close to suicide have thought about taking their own lives. This is such a good book and one that everyone should read, everyone will know someone who suffers with their mental health and this book really will help people understand, if not completekly, then at least on an empathetic level.

One of my favorite quotes is from a section discussing the emotional distress of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. Roman opens up on the experiences that have shaped him, revealing some hilarious and surprising anecdotes from his youth. Mental health is a massive concern for society at the moment with the pandemic and lockdown making it even harder for people to seek help and support. Every week, 1 in 10 young people in the UK experiences symptoms of a common mental health problem, such as anxiety or depression, and 1 in 5 have considered taking their own life at some point.I think she has a real talent at creating a comfortable environment for people to talk about themselves. It was during lockdown and there were only a handful of us, and it was tipping it down with rain, and I remember looking over at his mum and dad and thinking, that could have been my parents. They’re filled with incredibly relevant and practical support for emotional, spiritual, mental and physical health. I do like that Debra emphasizes that there is nothing wrong with doing therapy and taking anti-anxiety/anti-depression meds, but I think she fails to acknowledge that some issues can be resolved by getting a physical and blood work done by a doctor. It considers both those conditions that have resulted in individuals being sectioned (following up on individuals met during the ‘Psych Ward’ documentaries), alongside more ‘daily hassles’.
