The AOC is a pretty good option when it comes to a secondary monitor on the go but it won't be for everyone. A couple years from now this might not be such a huge issue but Type-A is still a lot more common currently, so the option would have been nice.

People who work from one of two places – their employer’s office or their home – probably won’t need such tech. It’s fine for document editing or browsing the web but won’t hold up in content creation and entertainment. The important thing to remember is that your computer’s brains are in the tower and everything is just displayed on the monitor, so your AOC monitor not working won’t actually do too much damage. As far as quality, it feels solid in hand, which is important, considering that this will most likely be packed and carried around quite a bit.AOC has prioritized portability and ease of use above all else, and the result is a display that anyone can set up and start using in a matter of seconds; it’s a case of plugging in a single cable and off you go. If you don’t see a message, you can assume that the montior isn’t getting power, so that is where you need to start. It doesn't have the highest resolution, the best color reproduction, or the most features, but it will allow you to set up an extra monitor in the middle of nowhere without the need for an external power source. During our testing, we used the display with a Dell Latitude 7389 2-in-1 laptop, the HP Chromebook 13 G1 and the Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch (Touch Bar).

AOC’s decision to keep HDR off the feature list is an honest, accurate representation of the monitor’s capabilities. The monitor lacks USB-A, HDMI, or DisplayPort input, so it’s best paired with a laptop or desktop that has USB-C out. Overdrive is set to ‘off’ as standard, and for much of the time you’ll probably want to leave it that way.This is particularly noticeable when watching videos where there’s plenty of dark areas or high levels of contrast – live music videos being a good example. When we viewed the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, the colors of costumes and explosions were a bit muddied, and dark elements, like the details on Black Panther's suit, were difficult to see. Included in the box is a foldable iPad sleeve-esque kickstand that has magnetic strips built into the ends, so that it snugly locks into position when you fold it up. It is slim and light enough to carry around with a laptop and doesn't require an external power source.My review unit’s uniformity was good, too, without large blotches or variances in brightness that might cause the contrast to appear lower across portions of the display. A single USB cable connects your laptop to the directly to the display, completely eliminating the need for extra media cables and a power supply. For basic productivity use, that may be a bigger deciding factor than the subtleties of color reproduction. The stand is very stable in portrait orientation, though using it this way means the USB-C power cable awkwardly juts out the “top” of the display.
