I am no expert on translating but I understand that NRSV is leans more towards the literal side of the continuum than the interpretive perhaps explaining the "thicker" text. I've collected and discarded countless study Bibles over the past twenty years, from topical, devotional Bibles like the Life Application to hardcore scholarly Bibles like the NOAB 2nd Edition, and almost everything in between. It would be better if notes of this nature were relegated to the back of the chapter, and if summaries/paraphrases of action were removed. All of the books in the KJV version of the Old Testament were originally written in Hebrew except for Ezra and Daniel, which were written in Hebrew and Aramaic; other canons have additional text from Aramaic and Greek. So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail Nabal's wife the Carmelite.

I was actually pretty surprised about these two issues: (1) that verse references and cross references within the annotations do NOT have ANY hyperlinks, and (2) - not really as important - the inconsistent way in which verse annotations are implemented (some appear as a pane in bottom half of screen, others as end notes, others (infrequently) seem not to work, and for some verses you touch the verse number and it takes you to the endnotes and, somewhat confusingly, there is not always a specific note for that verse there.

The Oxford Annotated Bible ( OAB), published also as the New Oxford Annotated Bible ( NOAB), is a study Bible published by the Oxford University Press. Highly recommended is the oh so wonderfully inclusive and all encompassing The New Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha (but of course also more something rather specialised and for a particular type of reader). But that kind of intense study reading, and going back and forth and following the cross-references, etc.

The only consolation is that it's so big and heavy my wife sometimes uses it to press flowers, which is fine by me because I wouldn't lend this book to anyone.I'm sick at heart when my former fundie peers pervert reason and their own minds "reconciling" the Bible's obviously irreconcilable contradictions in ways that would be laughed out of court if they were applied to any other corpus of literature, or produce grotesque readings of passages whose meanings are often plain enough but that contradict what they want to believe, claiming the "inspiration of the Holy Spirit" as if it provided access to some kind of interpretive Holy of Holies rather than failing to constitute even the most patently miserable of excuses for their blatantly warped interpretations. In keeping with the general desire to take account of the diversity of the users of this study Bible, the editors have adopted two widely‐accepted conventions: referring to the first portion of the text as 'the Hebrew Bible,' since it is a collection preserved by the Jewish community and that is how Jews regard it; and citing all dates in the notes as BCE or CE ('Before the Common Era' and 'Common Era') instead of BC or AD ('Before Christ' and 'Anno Domini' ['in the year of the Lord']), which imply a Christian view of the status of Jesus of Nazareth. I simply don't think I could get up in front of a group of people and intelligently discuss the Bible if I did not have this book. The essays are written for the general reader, not for specialists, and as such they make available to anyone who's interested not only the most recent scholarship but (again, just as importantly) the methods scholars have used and use to arrive at their conclusions.
