About this deal

A fiction book but a great adventure nonetheless this book set in Alaksa, will have you mesmerised by both the beauty and the harshness of an Alaskan winter. A fun adventure story about a very impressive woman who just seemed like the most fun person you could be around. The overall distance was equivalent to 90 barefoot marathons, but (in a bid to inject some realism into the equation) I started steady and built up my daily mileage. While I waited for his book about his time spent travelling across Spain playing the violin I thought I’d read the book which inspired his journey.

Armed with a limited grasp of Spanish and determined to meet as many llamas as possible, Anna and her friend Faye set off on a 6-month journey along the spine of the largest mountain range in the world – the Andes. The start of Barefoot Britain was a bit of a shock because I was doing big mileage day in, day out, which I hadn’t done in training. If you\'re an active traveller (who gets bored sitting at the beach for two weeks non-stop) then That Adventurer is for you. Running up to 32 miles a day and sleeping wild most nights, McNuff completed this challenge in 148 days, carrying everything she required with her in a 14kg backpack. It’ll have you drifting off into the land of nod, dreaming up journeys of your very own – and it’s proof that the only thing standing between you and the next wild adventure is a willingness to step beyond your front door.

The girls are always so eager to see my feet and surprised that they don't look all that different to their own – mine just have a bit more dirt on them.I have never met her but I feel like I can hear her voice in the text and it's brimming with infectious enthusiasm and joi-de-vivre, humility, love of running and love of other people and places. As she looks way back, she can see that she was destined to end up doing something like Barefoot Britain. Barefoot Britain” by Anna McNuff is one of the best outdoor adventure books as it takes readers on a journey of pushing mind and body to the limit by running 100 marathons barefoot from the Shetland Islands to London. She also has several other books (see below) all of which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed but this one is perhaps my favourite.

However what I really took from the book is how Anna isn't afraid of showing her vulnerability in it which I think really helps other women and girls know that just because you are struggling doesn't mean you aren't a kick arse hero too. When running with Anna, she was so welcoming and positive that I would never have realised how low she had felt. They’re reputed to be the best distance runners in the world; in 1993, one of them, aged 57, came first in a prestigious 100-mile race wearing a toga and sandals! Having passed the worst of the Edinburgh crowds we make our way through the Meadows, a huge public park a mile from the city centre. As always, the barefoot run was a huge experiment – one that I shared as openly as possible with youngsters and adults all the way through.
