The webinar will showcase coastal adaptation projects to frame how future-oriented planning and risk reduction can support communities and economic resilience. The Guidance Document identifies approaches for improving water resilience, based on the outcomes of the Questionnaire. Water resilience has two key elements: robust approaches to address a wide range of anticipated climate impacts, and flexible approaches that can change as needed to address impacts that are highly uncertain.

By focusing on the need for resilient interactions between projects, proposed solutions may become more cohesive and coherent to promote cross-sectoral and systemic resilience.AGWA’s vision is for effective climate change adaptation and mitigation practices to be mainstreamed and enabled within water resources management decision-making processes, policies, and implementation. Promoting robustness to extreme flooding and extreme droughts may simply be unfeasible, while the deferral for additional clarity and certainty about the future through flexibility may not always match the needs of decision makers for action.

Deep uncertainty describes a novel crisis in decision making: the analytical inability to distinguish between the likelihood of quite divergent future pathways, some of which may have disruptive and consequential economic, social and ecological impacts. Simply put, water resilience means the ability of water-related policies, plans and investments to cope with climate-related impacts. But climate change means that the availability of water for drinking, ecosystems, agriculture, industry and energy can no longer be assumed.

The mission of AGWA is to provision tools, partnerships, guidance, and technical assistance to improve effective decision making, action, governance, and analytical processes in water resources management, focusing on climate adaptation and mitigation. There will be a particular focus on the use of open-source data, conducting climate risk assessments, and tools for decision-making under uncertainty. We are working closely with a number of countries across Latin America, Asia and Africa who are committed to strengthening water resilience in their national climate planning. AGWA works primarily across two complementary and synergistic workstreams: driving the global and national water-climate policy agenda to support and enable more water-wise decisions, actions, and investments; and, developing technical approaches to resilient water management. From unpredictable rainfall patterns to extreme floods and droughts, water is widely recognized at the forefront of many climate disasters — the “teeth” of climate change.
