Every time something was pulled from a little cubby or out of a chest, my heart jumped like a child on an Easter egg hunt. It’s a style that can be hard to use as it relies on the quality of the character, both written and acted, to make it effective. But things soon take a turn for the 'real' when Rory has a sexual awakening, and after that comes to realise the serious politics underpinning global exploration. In the wake of all these historical men, Rory is a welcome hero, a young woman with complex thoughts and opinions, and an irresistible charm.

I still find tears suddenly dripping down my face, and I must have looked a right state crying into the miso soup I grabbed on the way home as a quick dinner. Here we find one word, aput, expressing SNOW ON THE GROUND; another one, qana, FALLING SNOW; a third one, piqsirpoq, DRIFTING SNOW; and a fourth one, qimuqsuq, A SNOWDRIFT. I’m delighted to say that they pull it off; the play is beautifully interpreted, and the performances striking in their competency. The play’s points about the fate of our Earth, symbolized by the declining condition of the polar bears, are well integrated into the human story as Rory meets a couple of locals that help her achieve her objective. The play unfolds in a wilderness which is both actual (arctic) and figurative (an emotional landscape filled with loss and abandonment). It is perfectly conceivable that this variety of ideas, each of which is expressed by a single independent term in English, might be expressed in other languages by derivations from the same term. Barnett is impassioned and intoxicating as Rory, the teenage tomboy who sets out to reach the North Pole to honour her dead dad, a geography teacher and a frustrated adventurer.Edward Sapir's and Benjamin Whorf's hypothesis of linguistic relativity holds that the language we speak both affects and reflects our view of the world. Languages in the Inuit and Yupik language groups add suffixes to words to express the same concepts expressed in English and many other languages by means of compound words, phrases, and even entire sentences. Inuit dialect spoken in Canada's Nunavik region has at least 53, including matsaaruti, for wet snow that can be used to ice a sleigh's runners, and pukak, for crystalline powder snow that looks like salt. There’s also a lot of humor in Hennessy’s writing, which has an attractive brightness, even when talking about grim issues such as funerals and grief.
