The Oscar-winning “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” originated from “Song of the South,” and it’s seemingly ubiquitous at Disney Parks and parades. Now, as Disney works to remove controversial aspects of the film from its properties, the song has now been removed from the daily Magic Happens parade at its California location. Last year, Disney already removed it from the Festival of Fantasy parade, a regular attraction of the Magic Kingdom at Disney World. If you’re a Disney fan or a fan of classic movies, you may be interested in owning Song of the South on DVD. However, it’s essential to consider the movie’s controversy and decide whether you’re comfortable supporting a film that some people consider racist. Barnes, Brooks (November 12, 2019). I grew up in the 90's watching songs like Zippity Doo Dah on Sing-Along-Song tapes but with none of the context of the actual film. Here on Archive.org was the first time I've actually had the opportunity to watch the film in its entirety. It's an excellent piece of film history. Amazing that this was Walt Disney's first live-action film. Let's not forget, this is NOT a documentary, it was a fictional film and a musical. Obviously it was going to depict things in an artificially rosy light. As all musicals do. Do you honestly think that chimney sweeps in Edwardian England went around dancing and singing happily as they toiled away on the roof tops at night? Most of them were child laborers working for pennies a day. The Music Man was a happy little film about a man committing felony fraud on an entire town's population. I think we all end up being very biased when we try to evaluate Disney movies—perhaps because they will always be inevitably connected to the nice memories of our first viewing experience as children. A young boy moves to a plantation in the American South and forms a deep bond with Uncle Remus. Uncle Remus is a former slave with a gift for spinning enchanting tales. These tales come to life through mesmerizing animation sequences, featuring the lovable Br’er Rabbit, Br’er Fox, and Br’er Bear. As Johnny navigates the complexities of his new life, he learns valuable lessons about friendship, empathy, and the power of storytelling. The Best Cinematic Experience: Thomas, Bob (1994) [1976]. The Splash Mountain log flume ride, which opened at Disneyland in 1989, and at Tokyo Disneyland and Magic Kingdom in 1992, is based on the animated portions of Song of the South. As with the film, the ride had drawn controversy over the years due to the racial issues associated with the work. Amid the George Floyd protests in 2020, Disney announced that they will retool the ride in Disneyland and Magic Kingdom to remove the Song of the South elements and replace them with a concept based on Disney's 2009 film The Princess and the Frog. Disney stated that development of the project began in 2019. [85] The New York Times reported that Disney executives had privately discussed removing the attraction's Song of the South theme for at least five years, before putting into development the Princess and the Frog theme. [86] In July 2022, Disney announced that the new ride will be called Tiana's Bayou Adventure and will open in both parks in late 2024. [87] The Magic Kingdom version of Splash Mountain closed in January 2023, [88] while the Disneyland version closed in May 2023. [89]

Song of the South opened in Los Angeles in 1947, which became its qualification year for the awards.
