About this deal

A Sliotar Work Group (SWG) was established in June 2021 with a view to ensuring that all matters pertaining to the use of approved match Sliotars, and the licensing of the GAA Sliotars suppliers, are regulated in the most effective manner possible. A player can hold the sliotar in their hand for up to two sets of 4 steps each before they must release it from their possession.

Hurling is a very popular sport in Ireland but clubs exist all around the world, and none attract as many players as the one in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The officially approved yellow sliotars are identical in composition, size, and weight as the officially approved white sliotars produced by the same suppliers which have been used in the All-Ireland Championship in recent years. If many players are struggling for the ball and no side is able to capitalize or gain control of it the referee may choose to throw the ball in between two opposing players. This is also known as a "throw in".

The same is true for viewers who are actually watching a sport in the stadium and for the players too. Wimbledon tried to hold out using the white ball for tradition until 1986 when they eventually had to bow under pressure because the viewers watching Wimbledon were finding it much more difficult to see the ball when it was white.
