About this deal

Treble. There is a spike around 10kHz on the 850. I did find them to be pretty bright at times, and fairly essy sounding. Do note that this headphone will sound somewhat artificial in many instances. Maybe if I'm feeling brave enough one day I will take apart the ear cup and speaker assembly to see how repairable they are from the inside, but for now I'm just happy to have a very good sounding set of headphones for my PC and iPod. Over time you’ll notice them hurting your ears due to the shallow cups and unfortunately it’s just about the same issue I have with the K240. There were some minor issues with their portability and long-term durability. But we’re not sure how many headphone models within this price ragne can compare. If you need something for a home studio, but still want to take it to the next level, K240 is the way to go. Price & Value For Money: Bottom Line Do you believe the hype? You should do. Every little tweak in the EQ setting of a sound has an effect somewhere. This means a boost in the low can impact how we perceive the highs. The key to it all is finding a balance between your different areas of the mix.

After this EQ, you should be notice many new and 'hidden' details masked even in your familiar music. I read a comment of yours saying that you put 5db down the 9-10k frequencies. Is there any need of fine-tuning the while EQ to make the frequencies more flatter? In the graph, the frequencies around 15-18k is also very high, and the frequency between 4-5k a bit low. Also, the base levels are curved down from around 150Hz to 20Hz. Is there any need of increasing that too? I want to listen in almost possible flat way, that’s why I’m asking this. We’re always led by this philosophy that you should invest more if a particular equipment piece brings more quality to your work. This is exactly what we’re referring to here. You’ll have to give more for K240, but the advantages that you get can mean a lot in the end. They can be strident at times, but it’s something you’ll likely either come to accept or EQ down a bit. Now, both of these headphone sets have this nice “blend” we mentioned. However, it’s a no-brainer that AKG K240 headphones look better. Sure, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but K240 really has an objective advantage here. Something I’ve also noticed is that instruments tend to sound more whole, with fully fleshed-out bass lines, as well as other instruments and vocals.

You can expect some decent stability with headphones like Samson SR850. However, although they are pretty comfortable, at least for their price level, the overall stability is not their strongest point. Take a look at the image below showing a snapshot of the frequency range of a Samson SR850 EQ pattern when put through a spectrum analyser. We can see there are so many lumps and bumps in there. I know some of my cheaper headphones people may laugh at ... say the Sony ZX100's or ZX110's may not have as great of a sound of these Samson's but one thing I love about the Samson's is that they dont "ruin" the other headphones I have ... like "these are so so great that anything else sounds bad now" ... these sound better but i am still happy with some of those other headphones too. I was sort of afraid that may happen, but glad it didn't. The HD668B don't do well with EQ when adding bass. They lose some definition and sound a bit too boomy.

There are plenty of tools out there offering these headphone equalizer software solutions and I am no way suggesting this is the be all and end all of solutions for Samson SR850 eq issue, but it is definitely a starting point in which to experiment. If you find this method works for you on this product, then when the time comes to buy a new set of headphones you may want to look at a Sonarworks or Morphit product. These products cater for numerous styles and designs of headphones. They also offer up solutions for monitoring your room and making sure the mix sounds good as your speaker calibration is correct. Sound Quality: These headphones SOUND AMAZING ... granted I have never had higher end headphones myself but I am a fan of "clean" sound ... not overly basey (though that can be fun at times) or too much treble, that can sound "tinny" that way.

Both require EQ for the treble. HD668B is more timbre accurate and natural after EQ than both SR and HD681, especially on acoustic instruments. Despite how well these headphones sound, I believe they will cater to only certain groups of people. In our opinion, the AKG K240 Studio are among the best options available in terms of budget-friendly headphones. They sound and feel far better than the Samsons. If you're a jazz&classical fan, the HD668B will have a slight edge. If you're more into modern music, the SR might be a better fit. As far as durability goes I've only had them for a few days so I can't say much as to how I think they'll stand up over the long term. I will say that the non-removable cable is definitely once again a downside as far as durability goes, but if you're really invested in keeping your SR850s alive and you're handy with a soldering iron I see no reason why you couldn't add an aux connector connector. The headband and metal supports seem quite sturdy given the price, and I expect these to last for years to come. By then I'll likely have something better, but honestly if you're just into them for the looks, for content creators or streamers they look really cool and professional. I think if these things ever have some sort of catastrophic failure I'll either buy a new pair or attempt to fix these myself, as the design seems fairly simple.Aside from this, the SR850 set goes more into high-ends. Sub-bass territories are kind of “cut off” and the response is mostly flat in bass and mid areas. They still manage to sound pretty great, at least for their price level. Sure, it’s not like they’re super durable, but they’ll get the job done if you need something to take with you. They come in handy if you’re looking for a “mobile studio” setting or if you’re a musician who’s always on the go. Portability: AKG K240 When it comes to treble, let’s just say that these headphones are… wonky. The entire region is exaggerated, making the low-highs sound harsh and the mid-highs piercing.

Amp. Because the 850 is a bit louder, it really doesn’t need amplification, while the 668B could benefit from it but doesn’t require it. How to choose a headphone amp!Of course, we’re not here to look into the best headphones for an active lifestyle. It’s not like you’ll be plugging them into your iPhone and go running cross-country. But it’s still always welcome to have studio headphones that can clamp tightly over your head and ears if needed. And even thought they both have detacheable cables, these can still yank the headphones off of your head with sudden movements or pulls. Upon arrival, you will receive the SR850s, a 1/8″ to 1/4″ adapter, and the manual. Not the best but not the worst. Compared to other headphones Sound (base ... if you are a "base-head"): just have to mention that if you are a "base head" needing extra base ... well these are not for you ... I'd RECOMMEND trying these to listen to your music as an extra pair ... but something like the SkullCandy Cruzher like series or The SoundCore series may be more of what you want. These are a good option if you have a more base heavy pair of headphones and you want to hear what all the bragging about these headphones are all about ... maybe for like rap you use those other headphones for jazz or soul music you use these ... in other wards "give these a try ... " sort of thing ... the BASE IS "there" but just not like some of my say Bluetooth headphones ... the base is done in a "classy" way .. a "clean" way, in my view. Before you do that though, the best piece of advice I can give is to try and get to know how your headphones sound. Learn their positive and negative points. Find how they balance when playing particular genres of music. Knowing your equipment is the best way to find your own sound. Sure, there are more comfortable options in this price range, but none sound that good. They’re also usually bloated with tons of bass. If you seek neutrality, Samson’s are as close as you can get.
