The walk passes the Old Graveyard stemming from this Viking period, as well as a chance to visit the Red Hill Nature Reserve. Izzy discovers that her amulet is a Tuareg artefact containing an inscription in Tifinagh, a language of the ancient world used for poetry and magic, understood now only by nomads in the deep desert. The desert routes once travelled by caravans of camels bearing ivory, gold and salt are now more perilous than ever but Isobel must follow them if she is ever to lay her ghosts to rest. So starts this adventure of a woman who is damaged from her childhood, but finds strength, romance and a new self, all because the amulet seemed to draw her to this strange and wonderful place.

The Old Salt Route was a medieval trade route in Northern Germany, one of the ancient network of salt roads which were used primarily for the transport of salt and other staples. In Germany it was referred to as Alte Salzstraße. She returned home, gave up her office job in London, sold her flat and shipped the contents to Morocco. At its heart, The Salt Road is about the strength of women, and further, is wonderfully insightful about the lives of the Tuareg people. The women in the novel, Mariata and Isabelle, overcome abuse and hardship and in the process find their true selves. There are also good and not so good surprises in store for both characters that keep the story suspenseful. Johnson portrays the Tuaregs as a fierce people fighting to preserve their traditions in an oppressive world. As railway construction flourished and the national highway opened during the Meiji period (1868-1912), the Salt Road fell into disuse. Nevertheless, walking along this lesser-known trail evokes a sense of the people, cattle, and horses that traversed it in centuries past. The road takes us through forgotten hamlets, majestic beech forests, and along clear mountain streams and ponds. The only sounds are birdsong and the rustling of leaves, the atmosphere imbued with the essence of bygone times. While both Isabelle and Mariata have romantic relationships, this is not the main focus of the book and at no point does the romance element either dominate or undermine the solving of the puzzle of the amulet. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Salt Road and was enthralled by the desert landscape which was painted as being full of life and mystery as well as being a dangerous and hostile environment. Both routes take in a number of points of interest, including the Grade II listed Parish Church of St Mary and St Gabriel, the 19th century Grimsby Road Pump, and the old Binbrook Water Mill, whilst the longer route also offers the chance to see wildflowers. She’s been writing since childhood, is a publishing director at HarperCollins, published the works of J. R. R. And by no accident.The story of Mariata and Amastan had to be my favourite of the two. Mariata was annoying at times as she was slightly arrogant at first, but after moving villages, she lightened up. From the start of her relationship with Amastan I could tell that something terrible was going to happen. Tana -one of my favourite characters- warned Mariata many times about Amastan but she was just too head over heels.
