About this deal

As the dawn of a new era begins, the cast and crew turn against each other with loyalty, decency, and trust, – replaced by scandal, betrayal, and an outrageous ambition to survive. In a true battle of the sexes, these women will do anything to stay on top. But can they team up to bring down their male rivals? Or will jealousy, betrayal and revenge tear their long-held friendships apart? If there’s one book you’re going to read in 2021, make it Ruthless Women. Utterly addictive from its opening chapters, the technically fictional novel (which draws on author Melanie Blake’s real-life experience as an agent to the stars) is unpredictable, unputdownable and unique to anything I have ever read.

Ruthless Women By Melanie Blake |The Works

Circe Offering the Cup to Odysseus,” by John William Waterhouse, 1891. Circe was among one of the most famous femme fatales in Greek mythology. Credit: Public Domain But writing has always been her dream and now, at the age of 44, she’s enjoying a second career in the spotlight usually saved for her leading ladies. Out, damned spot! Out, I say! One, two. Why then 'tis time to do't. Hell is murky. Fie, my lord, fie, a soldier, and afeard? What need we fear? Who knows it, when none can call our power to account? Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?(Act 5 Scene 1) If you’re looking for your next bed-table reading obsession, look no further: have a shot at Melanie Blake’s brand new book ‘Ruthless Women,’ which has already been critically acclaimed by the UK’s leading newspapers and magazines.

A glamorous, revenge-filled thriller that will have you hooked. So addictive we couldn’t put it down – it’s a real roller coaster of a ride” Sunday Mirror Director Farrah, lead actress Catherine and producer Amanda are the passionate, ambitious women holding the show together. With so much at stake, they will stop at nothing to stay in the jobs they love and on the island they call home. She went from being a TV extra to becoming one of the most powerful celebrity agents in the UK and an award-winning business woman. As one as the UK’s most successful agents, managers and publicists for British actresses, Melanie Blake has represented some of the most famous faces on British television and international screens. Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be /What thou art promised; yet do I fear thy nature, /It is too full o'th'milk of human kindness /To catch the nearest way. Thou wouldst be great, /Art not without ambition, but without /The illness should attend it. (Act 1 Scene 5) I am unapologetic about that. Men do it all the time and are labelled a stud, yet we all know what they call a woman who is sexually confident, don’t we?! It’s sexism, to put it mildly. I think one of the reasons people find the book so bingeworthy is because the characters’ lives are so exciting. And the inspiration behind them, soap actresses, are super-human women.

Oh absolutely! And I put that scene in the book! Some actresses are so highly sexed in real life because many have access to specialist doctors who put them on particular blends of HRT that contain testosterone, which leaves them with the libido of a 25-year-old. And that’s why the characters in the book are so sexually adventurous. And in my experience, that’s what many soap actresses can be like. Isn’t that fabulous?! The reason for that is because 50 Shades is told from a man’s perspective, despite being written by a woman. In my book, no female is taken advantage of sexually by a man. If some bloke tried to tie up one of my female characters, they’d be more likely to tie him up – then laugh and go and sh*g his mate! All the ladies are in control of their own sex lives – and that is very much my experience. All the sex scenes in that book are real. I watched with my very own eyes as one household name, who’s still on screen now, went at it with her chauffeur in the limo before a TV awards ceremony! The book takes readers on a wild ride behind the scenes of a glamorous TV drama, named Falcon Bay, – beamed globally to millions of people, three days a week from its picturesque location in the Channel Islands. There are many strong and powerful women, or femme fatales, who became known for their ruthlessness and cunning ways in Greek mythology, such as Circe, Clytemnestra, and Medea. All our service, / In every point twice done and then done double, /Were poor and single business to contend /Against those honours deep and broad wherewith /Your majesty loads our house.(Act 1 Scene 6) Read the bestselling first instalment in the Falcon Bay novels! Ruthless Women: The gripping, sexy and shocking Sunday Times

Her debut novel, The Thunder Girls (Pan Macmillan 2019) was inspired by the early years of her career spent working in the music industry (on Top of the Pops for instance), to selling out arenas across the UK,. Her follow up novel, Ruthless Women (Head of Zeus 2021) was heavily influenced by the last 15 years.

I’ve lived and breathed it all,” she tells us. “Tragedy, bankruptcy, attempted suicides, criminal dealings… as an agent you see all that drama all the time!”

cane – Pain As Pleasure cane – Pain As Pleasure

Throw into the mix a savvy agent desperately trying to keep her warring clients under control, and it’s clear why Melanie’s so familiar with her subject. With ageing actresses desperate to cling onto their crowns and ruthless male executives intent on booting them out for younger women, it’s a true battle of the sexes.I couldn’t possibly say, or I’d get sued! [Laughs] No character is based on an actual person, but they are amalgamation of everything and everyone I’ve seen in 20 years of this industry. They say write about what you know… and I’ve known a lot of b*tches and bad men. Yes, it’s fiction, but I have truly experienced every single scene in that book first hand,” she laughs. Not all of the drama will give you a laugh, however. There are some genuinely emotional and heart-wrenching moments woven within the story, that Blake manages to tell without sensationalisation. Instead, she uses poise and a lot of thought to ensure that she stays within the boundaries of the murkier topics involved, whilst still lending importance to the serious nature of each. Lady Macbeth seems to go from being someone with no conscience at all to someone who is overwhelmed by feelings of guilt. She cannot bear to think of what she has done and eventually dies alone and unmourned even by her husband. As an extra on a soap, you’re considered to be a lowest rung of the ladder, but it was excellent training to see what life on set was like. After all, no one’s watching what the extra is looking at! I remember one day where I was supposed to be just standing by the bar in the Queen Vic, suddenly Jessie Wallace and Barbara Windsor went at it off camera!
