DON’T MISS: The Best Mini Bike Pumps selection, including comparisons with CO2 inflators and much more. If you’re always hitting the 20 but you can tightly cluster your darts you’re inaccurate, but precise. Similarly, if you hit left of bullseye, bullseye and right of bullseye, your average accuracy would be good, but your precision would be bad,” he said. “For pressure gauges, accuracy is a combination of design and manufacturing of the internals, followed by a careful calibration to make sure that 100 = 100.” But Poertner pointed out that there are numerous moving parts that must also be very carefully constructed to produce precision – and that fixing these issues requires design and manufacturing processes with nonlinear cost/benefit relationships.

Each pump was assessed on its general usability, comfort and build quality. Additionally, we recruited Brady Kappius to custom-build a high-accuracy inline gauge to ensure repeatable results in our testing. With this, our benchmark digital gauge offers 1 per cent verified accuracy. When installing the tokens, ensure you thread them securely into the top-cap and the adjacent token. Were they to come loose, they could jam inside the fork. If you’ve ever used a low-quality pump, you know how unpleasant the experience can be. You may feel like the pump could break at any moment. For more aggressive riders, I recommend one or two tokens at 160mm”, explains Cancellier. “For each 10mm decrease in travel, I add one token. For example, 150mm would be two or three tokens, 140mm three or four tokens etc.”

Easily the most efficient pump that we’ve tested, and one that outperforms its price. The mechanical isn’t quite as accurate as a digital pump, but it has a bigger range being rated to 400 psi. There is a very non-linear relationship between accuracy, precision and cost,” he explains. “Accuracy and precision are different. I analogise it to throwing darts: accuracy is how close you are to the bullseye, so for a gauge, how close is 100psi to 100psi? Reasons to buy: Presta adapter means this pump works on tyres and suspension, high pressure and high volume modes, neat design, frame clip included, compact size

With such high pressures, you’ll want a comfortable handle. Some pumps feature a fold-out handle, others offer little to grasp onto. Hose Because it’s still quite compact, we found that it does take a while to inflate a tyre but is great for suspension setup since you can use the high-volume setting to initially boost a load of air into your fork, then the high-pressure setting to fine-tune it. We managed to get about 70psi in 20 strokes. Additionally, remember that the pressure may change due to outside temperature. This phenomenon is referred to as Charles’s law. Therefore, if you plan to ride in the winter, inflate the suspension slightly as pressure decreases due to the cold temperatures, and vice versa. Precision is how repeatable your darts are. If you aren’t always hitting the 20 but you can tightly cluster your darts, you are inaccurate but precise. Similarly, if you hit left of bullseye, bullseye and right of bullseye, your average accuracy would be good, but your precision would be bad.”

3. Low speed compression

Thus, heavier riders running higher air pressures will likely require more rebound damping than lighter riders. The pump itself is solid, with a bleed valve, extra-long hose and comfy handle, though it has quite a small volume so 100 strokes equates to about 81psi. Some pumps claim to have special valve heads that isolate attachment and the valve pin engagement; others don’t say much about the fact. If you want both pumps in one, this is simply your one and only good choice. It’s also the only pump on test to include an under bottle-cage mount – in case you’re keen to get it covered in mud.

At 284g and 250mm long, it’s an impressive combination of two pumps, especially given so many mini tyre pumps do without a gauge. However, it requires fewer strokes to inflate the pressure you need, making it ideal for mechanics in a workshop. On the downside the pump isn’t very comfortable to use since you have to grip around the gauge and the handle has quite a blunt shape. Poertner agreed, analogising the relationship between accuracy, precision, and cost to throwing darts: accuracy being how close you are to the bullseye (for a gauge, how close is 100psi to 100psi?) while precision is how repeatable your darts are. A larger volume is easier to bottom-out, a smaller volume will ramp up more towards the end of the stroke.

Topeak Shock Pumps

One common argument is whether air is released from the suspension when the pump is disconnected, or if it’s just air escaping from the pump. Also, some riders prefer a slightly faster fork while others a slower one. Whichever you prefer, you should aim to have the fork returning in a controlled manner that isn’t so fast as to return violently, or excessively slow.”

With that, see our next point. 4. Gauge accuracy doesn’t matter so much, but repeatability (precision) certainly doesTo counter such issues, Poertner suggests that whatever you choose to buy, you should treat it as a reference. You do have to hold the dial at the front but rubber coating makes that comfortable, though it is possible to get your fingers trapped under the handle – hold the handle to the side, and it’s fine. This is always a personal adjustment”, says Cancellier, “dependent on your air pressure — rebound is trying to control the force of the air spring returning to full extension.”
