About this deal

PRIOR TO APPLICATION – If your pond has excessive blanket weed, first remove as much as possible and dispose of it on the compost heap. This will prevent the build-up of dead organic material, and therefore improve microbial digestion and reduce oxygen consumption. First, consider whether a total clean-out is really necessary. The traditional advice is to give small ponds a complete overhaul to remove debris every five years, and give large ponds a thorough clean every ten years. You can use algae treatment for ponds alongside your pond filters and pumps or use green water pond treatments periodically when algae build up. Remove the plants gradually too, as the water level drops. Take the opportunity to re-pot or divide them if necessary – see our guide to propagating pond plants Recommended for: Clearing green pond water caused by free-swimming algae, and to reduce harmful bacteria strains. What is it? Clarifiers are a safe and effective way to treat free-swimming algae that causes green pond water.

Envii Pond Klear is the UK’s most trusted green pond water treatment with good reason. Containing innovative bacteria that work down to 4°C. This gives Envii Pond Klear a very unique advantage over other treatments. Most treatments only work down to around 12°C which gives algae a window to sneak in a little extra growth. Algae grows down to 8°C, therefore if the bacteria can’t work that low, there’s nothing to fight off the algae. Here are the AllPondSolutions top tips for keeping your pond water crystal clear! What Causes Pond Water to Turn Green? Barley is a widely used cereal grain found in many commercial food products across the world, as well as being a major component of many popular beer beverages. Surprisingly, barley straw has also been used for centuries as a natural algae deterrent in fresh bodies of water, including wells, lakes, and ponds. Barley by itself cannot stop algae from growing, but can produce potent substances during decomposition which work as natural algaecides. After placing barley in your pond it will slowly become waterlogged and sink to the bottom with the rest of your bottom sludge. As it slowly decomposes it will begin to release humic acid into the surrounding water; a natural product of the decomposition of certain organic material. As the humic acid enters the pond it reacts with both oxygen and sunlight, forming a super-oxide radical which leads to hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful algae killer, and is produced in a low enough volume from barley straw to be safe for the ecosystem, but still remain a highly effective algae deterrent. Why use it? A pond UV steriliser is a great option - combined with good performance pond filters and pond pumps; you can prevent algae build up and make sure your pond water is continually well oxygenated. Plants add valuable habitats for wildlife and enhance the beauty of a pond – keep them looking their best with these simple steps.Few sunlit ponds enjoy clear water year-round as its too tempting a breeding ground for nuisance algae. If designing a pond place it in partial shade, build a pergola or fit a sail over the pond to protect it from the full glare of the sun’s rays. Aquatic plants can be used to shade pond water too and up to two thirds of the pond surface area can be covered with pond plants. Introduce some pond life to clear pond water naturally As the water level falls, remove any fish as they become visible, carefully placing them in the holding tank. Do likewise with any larger pond creatures you find But if your pond is crying out for an overhaul, perhaps because it has silted up or become tooovergrown, thenthebest time to do itis in early autumn, when many creatures are less active. Although UV clarifiers can remove green-swimming algae very effectively, they will have no effect on the growth of larger types of algae, such as string algae and blanketweed. As well as this, for those of you wanting to save money on your electricity bill, running a UV Clarifier 24/7 likely isn’t the most viable option. Barley straw extract isn’t designed to remove an algae bloom already present, and it should never be used for this purpose as it can make conditions worse. However, it’s a very effective long-term deterrent, and can be added after an algae bloom has been treated with other methods (UV clarifier) to prevent the re-growth of algae in future. Since the mechanism of action requires decomposition to occur, monitoring water quality closely and providing plenty of aeration is important when using barley in ponds.

Circulating the water with a pump helpsto improve oxygen levels, whichbenefits both amphibians and fish, particularly in deeper ponds where oxygen doesn’t diffuse readily through the waterMainly I was worried that I’d have to use expensive chemicals for clearing my pond water. Plus, those chemicals might kill my fish and plants… or, even worse, it could cause me to have to start over from scratch with my pond.

Turns out that string algae growth in ponds is a super common problem. Why You Want To Get Rid Of Pond Algae ASAP Divide and re-pot deep-water aquatics with floating leaves, such as waterlilies, if they’ve becometoo large – see our guide to growing waterlilies Recommended for:Removing tannin (organic color), sediment, and free-swimming debris that can cause muddy or brown water. What is it? Fine filter media, such as filter wool, can help remove smaller particles contributing to muddy water. Recommended for:Reducing tannin, muddy water, dirty water, ammonia, nitrites, and chlorine via de-chlorination products. What is it? Mains water should be de-chlorinated during water changes to prevent swings in water quality and stress to fish.Note that to work, the microbes needs the water to be 10°C or more to work - So use April to October. Still not sure which UVC you need for algae control? Select a pond filter with UVC built-in. Trap the waste, flush the waste
