About this deal

If you are not watering your house plant the right amount and at the right frequency, it may start to dry out which can lead to leaves dropping off. Many healthy plants will drop some older/mature leaves as a way of renewing their foliage, so you will need to look at the pattern and amount of leaf drop to determine if this is abnormal for your plant. In addition to being able to assess when a houseplant needs water, it’s important to understand the factors that influence how much water they need. Pot size, soil type, temperature, humidity and airflow are just some of the factors that make a huge difference. I’ve written another article all about this aspect of houseplant watering over here. Light levels: Different plants prefer different levels of lighting. A lighting meter measures the intensity of light in a specific area. Artstone planters include a non-removable water reservoir, which raises the internal base height of the planter. These planters work best with the plant re-potted directly into them rather than left in their grow pots. If the intention is to leave the plant in its grow pot and sit it directly into the Artstone planter rather than re-potting the plant directly into the planter, please ensure you select a large enough size that will have enough internal height to hide the grow pot. The frost-free resin accounts for a higher price point, but this quality material should hold up for the long haul, so we think it’s still a great value. You should look forward to years of growing in this planter without having to worry about warping, fading, or other damage. It is styled to resemble copper but at a fraction of the cost and with the convenient addition of the self-watering feature.Varotsos, C.A.; Krapivin, V.F.; Mkrtchyan, F.A. As any soil moisture meter can handle the looser potting soil used for indoor plants, the probe is a greater concern for outdoor plants. However, regardless of the meter type, it’s best not to thrust the meter into soil with a lot of force. If users detect considerable resistance in any soil type or texture, remove the meter and try a different spot.

We tested them in bone-dry soil and then watered the medium to see how well the meters detected additional moisture. Ma, J.; Huang, S.; Li, J.; Li, X.; Song, X.; Leng, P.; Sun, Y. But if you prefer a digital display, as well as remote monitoring abilities, then the ECOWITT Soil Moisture Meter With Digital Display is a great option, although relatively pricey. We found the 7.7-inch probe to be highly sensitive and accurate when we tested various soil moisture levels and the unit requires no batteries or charging for proper operation. All in all, we were satisfied with this Gouevn as being budget-friendly and built to last. All plants are acutely tuned into and affected by their environment. As such, they are excellent at pointing out any changes in soil, temperature, or moisture and highlighting pest and disease problems. Even the novice gardener has probably gauged when to water a bed by noticing the nodding heads of a flower that is susceptible to drought conditions. Self-watering planters are often heavy-grade plastic, which is a good material because it can hold up to the elements, and you don’t have to worry about soil or water damaging it. Resin, cedar, and treated metal are other options. These can be more expensive and heavier to move than their plastic counterparts, but they often resist rusting, warping, and fading. Our best overall option, the Plow & Hearth Sussex Self-Watering Resin Pot Planter is made of durable resin but is stylish enough to display on a front porch. Once the water has evaporated from the house plant, you will feel a considerable weight difference in the pot. This can give you a rough idea of when the house plant needs water. As the pot gets lighter, the closer it is to needing more water. That depends on whether they’re indoors or outdoors, as well as temperature and humidity levels. In general, indoor plants need 1 inch of water per week. Outdoor potted plants in sunny, hot conditions may need to be watered daily to stay healthy. Calibration features also can help with accuracy. A user-calibrated meter allows the calibration to be adjusted for different conditions, such as for gardening or composting, humidity conditions, or to the specific moisture needs of certain plants. Press the "Mode" button to switch to soil fertility, which measures the electrical conductivity (EC) of the soil. This gives an indication of the availability of nutrients in the soil. Most plants do best with an EC value between 1 and 3; for example, tomatoes prefer an EC between 1.8 and 2.2. Clean the probes after use and don't leave the device submerged in water. It comes with three LR44 batteries. Steduto, P.; Hsiao, T.C.; Fereres, E.; Raes, D.
