If you decide to take full advantage of the extendable storage then you can maybe fit enough gear for camping with the exception of a tent. A core theme of the show was sustainability, and – Osprey being Osprey – they were front and centre of that theme. All spring 2020 products are PFC-free. Carryover items are switching from C8 to less hazardous C6 DWRs. Osprey hopes to eventually make all its offerings PFC-free. Side sleeves can often be flimsy or undersized, but the Archeon's are great, with plenty of depth to securely hold a big water bottle, and a useful combination of a stretchy top section for easier access and a nylon bottom part for toughness (think trekking pole tips and the like).

Sustainability” is an oft-spoken buzzword in the outdoor industry these days, and I’m wary of undeserving platitudes. But the Archeon 45 isn’t a poser. Having the option of hydration reservoir storage is great if you prefer hiking or traveling with one. I personally prefer the old fashioned water bottle, but for some hikers, not having a hydration reservoir is a deal breaker. With two layers of protection, you will have some peace of mind knowing that there is no way in hell your stuff is getting wet. Between the Osprey rain cover and the dry bags, you will be an unstoppable waterproof force up for any adventure.

It is almost twice as heavy as my trusty Osprey Quasar 28 and after a long day, I did feel the difference. The internal hydration reservoir sleeve securely holds the reservoir in place so you don’t have to worry about it moving around. This fabric is also Bluesign-approved, meaning the people that make the fabric work in healthy conditions and the fabric itself is sustainable. To top it off, a PFC-free durable water repellent coating is applied to the fabric to repel light rain and snow.

Other features include a sleeve for a hydration bag (Osprey's own Hydraulics Reservoir obviously fits well) and a whistle on the sternum strap.

Performance Comparison

A short sleeve with drawcord and a top strap (which could also hold a rope or helmet) and a non-adjustable lid cinched the load vertically. Four side compression straps stabilized and compressed the load horizontally. Accessing gear proved easier and faster via the dual-zippered front access panel.
