About this deal

There’s a hanging point both in the inner pod and front porch for hanging lights or head torches (that’s what we did). Being a responsible parent, I decided against christening it with two sprogs in tow, up a mountain in the middle of nowhere. If it turns out to leak badly or something is missing, a fun time wasn’t gonna he had. So we found a picturesque spot on the farm and pitched up for the night. Of the 3 the OEX was the cheapest by quite a long way (on sale at 89 quid). It also had the most internal space and the biggest porch. Important for us as we may occasionally use it as a 4 man tent (see above regarding wife).

For a while now I’ve been thinking about getting something a bit more suited to the Cumbrian climate. The kids are old enough to start hitting the hills now and I wanted something big enough for the 3 of us (and maybe the missus if I can convince her). The only criticism I have is the very reflective strip that runs around the base of the tent. It’s great for helping you find your tent, and it looks cool too, but for a stealth camper it may bother you. The OEX Coyote III is the largest tent in the OEX range, letting you camp in comfort, whether solo or with a companion.

That got us thinking though, that we’re looking at every possible item from OEX so it would be good to narrow our search down even further and only look at OEX branded products within the 3 – 4 Person Tents category. The cost of OEX 3 – 4 Person Tents Speaking of all weathers, we were hoping for snow, but on our first night, we didn’t get any. What we did get overnight was plenty of rain. This feels like a quality piece of kit and I’m still not entirely sure how they can make money selling it for just 89 quid (minus 10% forces discount). It rained a little last night and we stayed perfectly dry. It was also quite windy and it felt nice and sturdy. I’d have no hesitation in taking this out on the fells. The hydrostatic head of 5000mm exceeds most other tents and puts it firmly in the same league as serious mountain tents. The groundsheet is pre-attached, making pitching easy and keeping insects out, while the extended front porch gives you room to relax and plenty of space to store your gear.

The tent comes with two carry bags in the main bag, one is with the inner tent plus poles, and the other contains the shell. This is good to have if you want to share the weight with your partners. The outer flysheet material is more than capable in the waterproof department. Being made from 5000HH, we were kept adequately dry from the Scottish weather. Another factor that can be a great indication of product quality is the brand. Brands like OEX are of course extremely well known, especially for 3 – 4 Person Tents. The material the product is made from is often a sign of the quality for 3 – 4 Person Tents. Take a look at the product details over at Go Outdoors to get a feel for this. But there is also a large vestibule, again no numbers are given, my estimate is you have around 30 ft² (2.8 m²). So all together this is a lot of space. Yet, the tent is best suited for two people. Its simple tunnel design, robust flysheet and groundsheet and aluminium poles make it tough enough to protect you from stormy weather. The groundsheet is pre-attached, making pitching easy and keeping insects out. The compact front porch gives you room to store your wet kit and boots. All in all, very happy with this. Serious bargain. I think you’d struggle to find a better 3 man tent for even double what I paid for this.

Regarding the size, the tent is officially for three people. They do not provide the exact number for the area, but my estimate is that you have around 43 ft² (4 m²) in the inner tent. It is difficult to imagine three people inside but perhaps this is possible. A lightweight and versatile 3 man tunnel tent - updated for 2016 with high quality Yunan T6 poles and a lower profile design. The tent is quite low, and more importantly the vestibule opening is even lower because of the small brim above the door. You can see this from the picture below which shows the tent with the open vestibule. View with the vestibule open. The durable poly flysheet won't falter in arduous conditions and will give you years of service, being very waterproof (rated to 5000mm) and treated with a fire-retardant coating which will self-extinguish if exposed to flame. On the other hand, it is low profile, the poles are a quality aluminum, and its waterproof rating is simply excellent. So this is a tent for practically any environment and climate, suitable for a year-round use.

As mentioned, the inner door is double-layer and it is fully protected, so you can keep it with the mesh only all the time unless you feel cold of course. There is a mesh section on the inner tent and it matches the rear vent, see the picture. So there is not much to object here. The inner door with mesh, and the rear vent. Doors on each side let you choose your entry point according to the prevailing wind, and can also be opened as vents when camping in warmer weather.
