Jeffrey Archer τον γνώρισα από τη σειρά "Τα χρονικά των Κλίφτον". 7 βιβλία σε audio books, που με διασκέδασαν αφάνταστα, στην αρχή της χρονιάς. Everybody is so stiff upper lip English even the American and French characters manage that peculiar English affectation. Earlier, in 1966, he had failed to acquire Lot 49,Mademoiselle Ravoux, from Christie, Manson & Woods, the London art dealers; although the Rev. Theodore Pitcairn, representing the Lord's New Church in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania, had pushed him over the top, he had only whetted his appetite further. The Lord giveth, and on that occasion the Lord had taken away. Although it was not fully appreciated in Boston, it was already recognized in the art world that Harvey had one of the finest Impressionist collections in the world, almost as widely admired as that of Walter Annenberg, President Nixon's Ambassador to London who, like Harvey, had been one of the few people to build up a major collection since the Second World War. Roger's only ambition in life was to become an officer in the Navy, but after graduating from Dartmouth he had had to return to the family business because of his father's ill health. He had only been with the firm a few months when his father died. Roger would have liked to have sold Sharpley & Son to the first bidder, but his father had made a codicil to his will to the effect that if the firm were sold before Roger's fortieth birthday (that being the last day one can enlist for the U.S. Navy), the money gained from the sale would be divided equally among his other relatives. A text adventure game adaption based on the book was developed and published by Domark, and released in 1987 for the Amstrad CPC, Atari XL, BBC Micro, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum computers.

Look, I read it to the end so it couldn’t have been too bad but I’m really glad that Jeffery Archer has, with the passage of time, improved greatly as an author. Being fine upstanding, law abiding citizens all they want is exactly what was taken from then, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less. Though his later day novels turned in to kind of similar concepts predictable twists and turns , his earlier works were really, really good. Archer knows how to hold the attention of the reader with right amount of surprises at the right time and its very clear in this one. Harvey couldn’t believe it. How easy it would be to use such a licence to create an impression of a vast enterprise! For a few hundred dollars he could be alongside such names as Shell, BP, Total, Gulf and Occidental.

Taking advantage of a British decision to allow companies to claim North Sea oil drilling rights with little money down, Metcalfe creates Prospecta Oil, a paper company [ clarification needed] designed to look good and bring in investors, to be left hanging out to dry when the bottom drops out. Metcalfe's agents hire David Kesler, a Harvard MBA who talks up the company to the four protagonists: Stephen Bradley, an American professor at the University of Oxford; Dr Robin Oakley, a Harley Street doctor; Jean-Pierre Lamanns, a French art dealer with a gallery in London; and James Brigsley, heir to an earldom. Cara-cara yang diorang guna akan membuat kita tersenyum dan memang sampai mati pun Metcalfe belum tentu perasan yang diorang tu dah dapat balik hak diorang, each and every penny. He was unable to sleep that night and became steadily more restless in his small open-windowed but airless room. At 1 A.M. he could stand the uncertainty no longer, so he jumped out of bed, shaved, dressed and took a subway to Grand Central Station. From there he walked to Times Square where with trembling hands he bought the first edition of the Wall Street Journal For a moment he couldn't take in the news, although it was shrieking at him in banner headlines: And meanwhile, my own Me was just simply lost and bemused. I didn't fit into their mold (ouch, very punny).

I think this was Jeffery Archer’s first book and it reads like it should be. The word that comes to mind is ‘farcical’. Cause most of us start out that way, but not insecure me. I started weak, gradually worked up a heavy head of steam, and, in retirement fell down deep - eventually, into the perfect peace of a clear conscience.

In 1990 the book was adapted as a four-hour, two-part mini-series, directed by Clive Donner with Ed Asner as Harvey Metcalfe, Ed Begley Jr. as Stephen Bradley, François-Éric Gendron as Jean-Pierre Lamanns, Brian Protheroe as James Brigsley and Nicholas Jones as Dr. Robin Oakley, and also starring Jenny Agutter and Maryam d'Abo. Change the plan you will roll onto at any time during your trial by visiting the “Settings & Account” section. What happens at the end of my trial? When Henryk was a pimply and flourishing fourteen-year-old, his father died of what we now know to be cancer. His mother outlived her husband by no more than a few months, leaving the five children to fend for themselves. Henryk, like the other four, should have gone into the district orphanage for destitute children, but in the mid-1920s it was not hard for a boy to disappear in New York--though it was harder to survive. Henryk became a master of survival, a schooling which was to prove very useful to him in later life. Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less was Jeffrey Archer's first novel, first published in 1976. It was said to have been inspired by Archer's real-life experience of near- bankruptcy. On May 13th, 1964, the Secretary of State for Power laid before Parliament "Statutory Instrument-- No. 708--Continental Shelf--Petroleum." Harvey read this particular document with great interest, thinking that it might well be a means of making an exceptional killing. He was particularly fascinated by Paragraph 4 of the document, which read:Ironically the BBC parodied their own adaptation in arts programme The Late Show where they reduced it to two minutes which was actually just as good, if not better and certainly cheaper. This was an expensive BBC and US co production with several American stars. The tone is rather camp, the acting is slightly over the top. Ed Begley seems a little lost in all these while Ed Asner seems to get the brief right, just about staying in the right side of hammy. MAKING A MILLION legally has always been difficult. Making a million illegally has always been a little easier. Keeping a million when you have made it is perhaps the most difficult of all. Henryk Metelski was one of those rare men who had managed all three. Even if the million he had made legally came after the million he had made illegally, Metelski was still a yard ahead of the others, he had managed to keep it all. This is the first full-length novel I read of Archer, and I remember the story, the characters even after 15 years. And that speaks a lot about this book. Doesn't it?
