About this deal

When the hopper lid or door are open embedded safety features immediately stop the fan plus the lid switch monitors the grill to maintain the correct cooking temperature they are open. Convenience at Your Fingertips: The integrated Wi-Fi connectivity and user-friendly Masterbuilt app provide convenience and flexibility, allowing you to monitor and control your grill effortlessly. Instead of a hopper full of pellets, you add lump or briquette charcoal. You still need to add a fire-starter, but then the fan controls the burn rate and manages the temperature of the grill.

These charcoal cooking grills have a limited 1 year warranty on all parts. We’ve reached out to Masterbuilt to clarify if anything on the grill is covered for more than a year, and will update after we get a response. Additional Accessories: Gravity fed charcoal grills aren’t anything new in the market, but until now they have been reserved for those who want to spend a whole lot more money. Redefine charcoal cooking with the GravityFed™ Hopper that holds 12+ hours of fuel using lump or briquette charcoal. No need to remove charcoal after each use!

We’ll be breaking down the differences between the two models here in just a moment. But first let’s talk about what’s the same in both the 560 and the 1050. Functionality: The middle level is approximately 12 inches deep, while the top level measures around 8 inches deep. Food Capacity: While the control panel works well, I found the display’s glossy screen somewhat hard to read outdoors in bright sunlight. It seems no matter how I had the cooker positioned there was a glare. It’s much easier to read in early morning, evening, and cloudy conditions. In case you were wondering here are some pork ribs I cooked. They turned out real nice and juicy. Testing the Gravity 560 Average build quality– After a few uses already noticed some paint coming off and the materials used are clearly average.

The issues I had was that basically whole briquettes and large chunks of lump would still fall through and often. I like to put every grill I test through some standard tests to see how well it performs in a few different areas. Come up to temp speed test As with many other “smart” cookers, we found the wireless connectivity to be hit and miss. Sometimes it would connect but the connection would later fail. Sometimes it would not connect. Other times it connected fine and remained connected throughout the cook. We’re not alone. Masterbuilt mentioned to me that this is a known issue, and subsequent firmware and app updates should correct these issues. Currently as of this writing, the app does not allow the user to switch between Bluetooth connection and Wi-Fi, which offers much greater range. We were assured that the ability to toggle to WiFi will come with a later update. Thankfully, the Gravity Series doesn’t require these wireless connections to function, so if you don’t have any fancy wireless devices you can still use it successfully. Conveniences

Review Us

The Gravity Series uses a 2-part grease removal system with a sloped assembly underneath the cooking chamber to direct grease and drippings to a grease tray. Both parts are completely removable for cleaning. And of course, what’s a smoker test from AmazingRibs.com without ribs? Here are the results of a 6-hour low & slow BBQ rib cook following our Last Meal Ribs recipe. Once again, a successful cook and a very happy mouth.

That said, I’m a little nervous about the build quality. Especially when you have electronic components, cheaply built grills can turn into a big headache. Cleaning the kettle regularly is advisable. The fat that falls to the bottom during a cook cakes up and can cause some situations. You will not notice this during low and slow cooks, but if you grill at higher temperatures, that layer of fat can ignite and cause a pit fire. The temperature gauge doesn’t exactly inspire confidence either, with no actual temperature markings. It’s more cosmetic, as you can see the temperature readout on the digital screen. Note: The most important thing to remember with this machine is to pull out the two metal slides before starting! When pulled out, the top “heat intake” slide and the bottom “air intake” slide open up the airflow into the cooking chamber and into the lit coals, respectively. If either slide is left inserted during startup, the coals will not light and the cooker can be damaged. After cooking is complete, re-inserting the slides then stifles the coals to help with cool-down. Pellet grills have been all the rage for the past 5-10 years in the outdoor cooking market. It seems like everyone has one now, and even Weber has recently joined the pellet grill game with their new SmokeFire pellet cooker.

We might note here: While we appreciate and admire the novel design, it’s not necessary to understand how or why it works. Because if you follow the instructions, it will work—as we learned. Firing It Up
