The first pair of Major IIIs that Marshall sent in actually had an issue with the headband, resulting in deformations. It was likely a one-off, but is a pitfall of a weaker structure as opposed to a single continuous piece of metal, as seen in the MID headphones. Google Assistant support may be the Marshall Major III Voice’s headline-grabbing feature, but battery life is easily at the top of my list of a feature worth shouting about. These headphones last “up to 60 hours” following a single charge. So long, in fact, that it’s difficult to test this figure while also using them in a remotely normal way. Based on Marshall’s iconic amps, these wireless headphones make use of the brand’s signature leather look (although this material is actually made of lookalike vinyl, vegans will be pleased to know), with gold accents, sturdy metallic hardware, and the Marshall script proudly displayed on the outer housings. They fare better with Wild Beasts’ All The King’s Men, in which baritone vocals sound rich and sonorous, while meandering bass lines underpin complicated drum fills and undulating guitar riffs. Unfortunately, connecting the cable doesn't power down the headphones automatically. That only occurs when the other end of the cable connects to your mobile device, and in that case, it's the mobile device ending the connection. If you're paired with a phone and connect one end of the cable to the headphones and leave the other loose, audio will still stream to your headphones from your paired device. It's not a huge issue, but you'll have to be certain your headphones are powered down, or you can easily drain your battery without realizing it. On the positive side, we didn't detect a major difference in audio performance between active wired and passive wired listening.

The Bluetooth Major III are almost twice the cost. However, in return you get solid Bluetooth stability, high-quality aptX streaming, and up to 30 hours of battery life. They only connect to one device at any one time, but can be paired with multiple phones, tablets and computers In addition, the Major III aren’t as well built, or attractive, as the MID Bluetooth, currently available for just a little more. The Google link-up is separate to the standard Bluetooth link-up, and the Google one failed on me a few times. Of course, most of you will only have to pair up a few times, if not once.

Passive noise cancellation is never a strong point of on-ear headphones, but the Marshall Major IIIs are particularly disappointing in this regard. We tried them in the office and could still easily hear people’s conversations, meaning you’d have to really blast your music if you wanted to drown out the outside world. There’s no active noise cancellation option offered here, which isn’t surprising considering this is seen as more of an entry level pair from Marshall. For active noise cancellation, you’re going to have to stump up the cash for the enjoyable and premium Marshall Mid ANCs. Marshall is almost a decade into making headphones at this point, and its designs have been refined to a point where they don’t need to change all that much year-to-year. In terms of design, the Marshall Major III Voice headphones haven’t changed dramatically since their wireless predecessor was released in 2018. They sport the same compact on-ear design, which is fully collapsible so you can easily stow them away in your bag when not in use.I didn’t find their wireless performance perfect, though. When heading into busy areas – such as London’s Victoria station – there were occasional blips, and the pairing process is a little more confusing than a standard set of Bluetooth headphones. New to this generation of the Marshall Major III headphones is support for Google Assistant – simply press a dedicated button on the outer right earcup to summon the voice assistant on your device.
