Unfortunately for… well, practically everybody, the fighting escalated to such apocalyptic proportions that it now threatens a vast area of space, and forces otherwise content to leave the Imperium to their folly find themselves drawn in to avert calamity should the Octarian War spill out into the rest of Ultima Segmentum.

This box contains a squad of 10 of these tireless troopers, who can either be built as a group of specialists for games of Kill Team or deployed with your brave regiments in games of Warhammer 40,000. Kill Team: Kommandos Kill Team, for me at least, has always been about personalisation. One of my favourite things to do as a hobbyist is to look at people’s heavily converted and individualised Kill Teams, and that is being taken away from players – at least for the time being. Whilst this box isn’t the root cause of this, the new edition which it heralds is.

Kill Team Compendium

THE TL;DR: The new Fire Team rules mean you can only field models from one or two units according to the Kill Team Compendium, which you have to buy separately. The Kill Team Compendium is not only expensive, but is also bereft of unique rules for a huge number of models. If the Kill Team Roadmap is anything to go by, these rules probably won’t appear until well into the future and will require you to spend more money to obtain. The kill teams themselves undertake critical missions in this theatre of war, hoping to break the fragile stalemate. So important are the developments in the embattled sector that even those forces not directly involved* have a stake in this momentous conflict. Scaling things down to the grubby world of inter-gang skirmishes, Necromunda has a slew of releases that make the Zone Mortalis even more deadly. Hive Scum Kill Team 2nd Edition won’t be all about one-off scraps to the death. Its Spec Ops campaign mode lets you field your operatives across persistent narrative battles, earning new skills and equipment along the way.

Some operators’ abilities can modify other operators’ APL stat, to buff allies or slow down enemies. The Orks don’t have the same firepower, but make up for it with greater numbers, beefier maximum wounds, and the Throat Slittas rule, which allows them to charge the enemy directly out of concealment. Gallowdark scenery – mostly like the Into the Dark box, but with some added turrets and obstacles that the rulebook in the box has rules for.

As always, I haven’t been able to fit the fully folded-out game mat into my lightbox. However, today I’ve engaged my brain (a hard thing to do on a Saturday morning) and realised the board can be partially folded out to give you a look at what is printed on both sides.
