Underground"-branded Tube map from 1908 showing the District and Metropolitan lines with Aldgate at right and Kensington at lower left I've been reading this doorstop off and on for a little over a year now, with the advantage of having read "Hound of the Baskervilles" some years ago and a handful of other stories here and there. The magnet stories for summer days and winter nights, illustrations by D. H. Friston, London: Groombridge and sons

His very person and appearance were such as to strike the attention of the most casual observer. In height he was rather over six feet, and so excessively lean that he seemed to be considerably taller. His eyes were sharp and piercing, save during those intervals of torpor to which I have alluded; and his thin, hawk-like nose gave his whole expression an air of alertness and decision. His chin, too, had the prominence and squareness which mark the man of determination. His hands were invariably blotted with ink and stained with chemicals, yet he was possessed of extraordinary delicacy of touch, as I frequently had occasion to observe when I watched him manipulating his fragile philosophical instruments. [ A Study in Scarlet 8] The other extra door is a second exit which allows Holmes and Watson to go out through the bedroom and leave the premises undetected. But I was also growing into a modern girl, one who had big ideas about becoming someone, and doing something big in this world. I’ve been thinking of Doyle’s spiritualism lately and what Holmes would have made of it all. I can’t help feeling that there might have been words between the two of them and tuts and the slow shaking of the head. That is, I sometimes wonder if Holmes, the character, was more necessary, in a sense, than Doyle the writer. I know that sounds like a silly thing to say, but I think it might be at least a little true too. Holmes is, in a nutshell, single-minded in his detection. In that respect, it makes sense that all emotions, particularly love, are abhorrent to his cold, precise, but admirably balanced mind. He's basically an instrument for finding out criminal stuff. I actually appreciated this, since Doyle didn't risk all the soap opera-ish entanglements that make long-running serials hard to follow without a map. He conceived each of his stories as both united by Holmes' character, and yet still potentially interesting to people who had never read any other of his stories. And the only obstacle was the prohibitive cost. This unique dwelling happened to be located on Baker Street among the crowded and simple dwellings that working class families could afford, but it was not cheap.

Francis Bamford & Viola Bankes Vicious Circle: the Case of the Missing Irish Crown Jewels. 212 p. illus. New York: Horizon Press, 1907 A Favourite Beautiful Quote: “[T]he heath-covered countryside, with the glowing clumps of flowering gorse, seemed all the more beautiful to eyes which were weary of the duns and drabs and slate-greys of London. Holmes and I walked along the broad, sandy road inhaling the fresh morning air, and rejoicing in the music of the birds and the fresh breath of the spring. From a rise of the road on the shoulder of Crooksbury Hill, we could see the grim Hall bristling out from amidst the ancient oaks, which, old as they were, were still younger than the building which they surrounded.” Baker Street was later extended, but 221B still did not exist because there was a large building at that location called Abbey House which took up the space of several numbers including 221. I had a great feeling of loss when my reading adventure came to a definitive end. Also a feeling of relief, where I felt my bounds of duty were cut, and I was able to pursue other literary paths. I am new to audiobooks. There is a certain point in the evenings where my eyes tire and I have no interest in watching TV, so these audiobooks keep me company in the watches of the night. I also take them to bed where they help me drop off to sleep. I know the stories so well that I don't have to worry that I will miss anything important.

Sidney Paget, the Artist Who Illustrated the Sherlock Holmes Stories

We can discuss that once we are on the train," replied Holmes firmly. And, true to his word, he said no more until we were comfortably ensconced in the First Class carriage of the Dover Express. I have outlined the three rooms in red to show how absurd such an idea really is. It is simply out of the question. Holmes could have simply rented the sitting room and adjacent bedroom for himself with no need to ask Watson to go halves with him. And the stories would lose their narrator. At the age of nine Conan Doyle was sent to the Roman Catholic Jesuit preparatory school, Hodder Place, Stonyhurst. He then went on to Stonyhurst College, leaving in 1875. They were a typical dwelling for the working class in London in the 1800's and can be seen in old photos of Baker Street.
