I imagine that this isn’t exactly the way you were hoping Rise of the Dread Moon to be revealed to the world. I imagine that you had, and maybe still do have big plans for the big reveal. In the ideal world, everything would go according to plan, everyone would receive the game at the same time on launch day, everything would be perfect.

HeroQuest: Rise of the Dead Moon is an immersive and thrilling fantasy board game that takes players on an epic journey through a world filled with dark magic, sinister creatures, and ancient mysteries. Developed as a modern adaptation of the classic HeroQuest board game, Rise of the Dead Moon promises to captivate both nostalgic fans and newcomers alike with its engaging gameplay and rich storytelling. First released in 1989 as a joint venture between Games Workshop and Milton Bradley, HeroQuest is arguably one of the most influential board games in the hobby. Its design and structure helped clear the way for an entire ecosystem of similar titles. The decades since found HeroQuest as a hard-to-find collector’s item until Hasbro and Avalon Hill crowdfunded a new edition in 2020. Beneath the surface, evil machinations are travel and communications within the kingdom have been disrupted and a group of Guardian Knights investigating Zargon’s agents has gone missing. Furthermore, an astrological event, called the Night of the Dread Moon is close at hand. This event that occurs once every 1000 years strengthens the power of Dread Magic.

Originally published by Milton Bradley and Games Workshop (of Warhammer 40K fame), the original HeroQuest debuted in 1989. In that first game, players took on the roles of the Barbarian, Dwarf, Elf, and Wizard to explore the dungeon of the former apprentice of Mentor named Zargon (or Morcar in the UK). I think there is already going to be a lot of plastic in this expansion. There’s the new Knight, Several new Elven characters, possible Cultists or Wizard type enemies, and we can’t forget Sir Ragnar. I doubt they’ll include more than one sculpt for the Specter. Any named specters, we’ll probably still have to use the Dread Sorcerer!

The Assassin, seeing it’s chance, swings at the Barbarian, nearly taking him out. The Barbarian is left with 1 remaining Body Point. Poison! (FH, text is re-arranged and simplified but same basic description, identical mechanic and artwork) I know the community has been really excited and hyped up about Rise of the Dread Moon, and although we are thrilled to have more details about the expansion, I can’t help but feel bad about the way it’s happened.

You have to remember that I’m going at this with a brand new party. If your group comes into Rise of the Dread Moon, with at least the Game System under their belts, they may even be able to take on the Wraith with a better result than I got. Don’t get me wrong, it still looks pretty, but it’s nice to have some interaction now.
