Books to Teach Retelling Incredible Power of Picture Books to Teach Retelling

Leadership principles are effectively taught to all students through direct lessons, integrated approaches, and staff modeling. Students are able to think critically about and apply leadership principles. Tara: 4 stars. I found the facts, the information, fascinating. The cute-sy stuff in between just okay. The school community is able to see leadership in the physical environment, hear leadership through a common language , and feel leadership through a culture of caring, relationships, and affirmation. NAIDOO: All right. So this year's winner of the Randolph Caldecott Medal for outstanding illustration of children's books is "Hello Lighthouse." MEDINA: When I think of the Newbery, I think of all the books over the years that I have read and loved - the books that shaped my children's lives. And I just hold them in such high regard. And there's a piece of you - it always feels like it couldn't possibly be you, and it was. And that was the amazing thing.Families and the school partner together in learning about the 7 Habits and leadership principles through effective communication and mutual respect. NEARY: The Caldecott, along with the Newbery Medal, which is given for the most outstanding contribution to children's literature, is highly anticipated by the entire children's book industry, but none more so than the writers. This year's Newbery Medal winner, Meg Medina, author of "Merci Suarez Changes Gears," thought she might hear some news about the award last night. I’ve loved lighthouses since I was a girl, and I know I would have pored over this book many times during preschool and early elementary grade ages. I enjoyed viewing the lighthouse rooms and their contents. Entrancing and enchanting. As a child the pictures could have kept me captivated for long periods of time. NEARY: Medina loves the idea that her book will always have the stamp of the Newbery on its cover and that winning the medal means it will be around for a long time. Perhaps, she says, her grandchildren will find it on a library shelf one day. Lynn Neary, NPR News, Washington. FELLOWS: And over hours and hours and hours, we talk. But it also becomes a process of embracing new loves during the course of this discussion and, sometimes a little regretfully, letting go of old loves that we have.

a b Stuart, Emmie (2018-10-11). "Hello Lighthouse — The Horn Book". Calling Caldecott. Hornbook . Retrieved 2019-01-29. The principal, school administration and staff engage in ongoing learning and develop as leaders, while championing leadership for the school. Schoolwide, classroom, family, and community leadership events provide authentic environments to celebrate leadership, build culture, and allow students to practice leadership skills. NEARY: Medina was so sure she didn't win that when the call came this morning, she says it felt surreal. Begin by introducing Hello, Lighthouse. This may be a class read aloud, shared reading, small group setting, or independent reading. This is a choice for individual educators depending on the needs of students. Multiple copies of the book are recommended because students will be referring to the text throughout all of the learning experiences. Since students will be exploring the book in detail, it is important to leave plenty of “thinking work” for students, so it is best to avoid too much scaffolding during this first introduction.

MARY FELLOWS: There are cutaways of the lighthouse so we can see the interior. There are these wonderful uses of swooping and swirling seagulls and crashing waves and Northern Lights. And it's a feast of color. This morning, at its annual conference in Seattle, the American Library Association gave out its prizes for children's and young adult literature. Its awards include the prestigious Caldecott and Newbery medals. NPR's Lynn Neary reports. The repetitive lines story was rather sad, and more than a bit gloomy at times, though it’s also sweet and has an ending that while not idyllic is pleasant and happy enough. Some might also love the story but this could have worked fine for me as a wordless or nearly wordless picture book. For young children I can see how the words might be lulling and entertaining.
