Finally, for a whiskey to be called bourbon, the only additive can be water, and only to proof the whiskey down. The initial flavor of Evan Williams bourbon is actually not that compelling, but there are some interesting things to be experienced later on. It’s sort of like meeting someone you don’t think is fascinating at first, but later you decide he could be quite charming. As I take more sips, I continue to taste the initial flavors with the addition of caramel, honey, vanilla, apple butter, allspice, jalapeno pepper, wintergreen mints, leather, herbal tea with chamomile notes, and cinnamon. This is a cool looking bottle with very fine bourbon inside of it. But when it comes to Buffalo Trace, there are so, so many great bottles to choose from that are, frankly, cheaper than this. In the end, it kind of feels like you’re paying a premium to collect little horses for behind your bar. Evan Williams has got to be one of the top-selling bourbons around. It’s cheap, smooth, and it sells well. That’s probably why they make it by the trainload. But Evan Williams is hardly the best bourbon you can buy and today we’ll take a look at some great Evan Williams alternatives. Heaven Hill 7 Year Bottled in Bond The nose is fairly light but very appealing. There are some lighter aromas of fruit, both citrus and tropical. The vanilla is evident, but not overpowering. Bartenders tend to love this bottle. It’s cheap, meaning profit margins really pop when you keep this one on the rail. And it’s fine. I’ve called it out a lot in the past as a great cheap bourbon. But we all need to stop pretending this is something more than it is. It’s a workhorse bourbon that you take shots of and chase with a beer. Here’s another representative of Heaven Hill’s. The bottle design is great, and the branding of the whiskey is definitely on point with a very zen-like aesthetic. The bottle alone is a fantastic conversation piece, especially when guests come over and notice your collection.
It is between 5-7 years old. The Evan Williams’ mash bill is 78% corn, 12% malted barley and 10% rye. It retails for R250 in SA, and I see that there is some available at WhiskyBrother&Co. The flagship bourbon of Evan Williams is produced in Heaven Hill Distillery, and it is aged longer than required by law. While bottled in lower proof than other Evan Williams core expressions, it delivers a rich and smooth taste and aroma.I couldn’t agree more! While whisky global liquor giants use the term ‘prestige’ to describe Scotch whiskies above a certain age, the fact is that there are an ample number of bourbons too that qualify for this term.
