Alexander is an author of scary stories, and this one did not disappoint. Of course, it was at a YA level and not adult, so it couldn't be too scary. It did have me holding the book pretty tight at some scenes, though. The vividness of the descriptions helped with that. Strengths: Horror is NOT my favorite genre, but my students love to read it, and we have a lot of conversations about the sort of books that interest them. While I'm not going to provide them with as much gory, human-on-human violence as they would like (still not convinced this is something that is good for eleven-year-olds!), I'm always looking for things that are scary. They also are ridiculously fond of video game books like Tor's Minecraft series, and Escape has a lot of moments that have the feel of video games. The inclusions of a variety of young social media influencers is fantastic, and something I haven't seen a whole lot of, even though many of my students are sure that that's what they will do when they grow up. (After 16 years and a mere 326 blog followers, I'm not going to bet my retirement on this course of action!) I appreciate that Alexander doesn't skimp on the plot or the character development, although the thrill ride of the theme park definitely is center stage. The best part of the story was the uncertainty of what was really going on with the theme park; we have an inkling, thanks to the Scooby-Doo-ish villain Mr. Gould who is practically muttering "You meddling kids!". I am LDS and confidently can say how very few similarities there are between the FLDS and LDS churches. Glory be!!! As an LDS woman I have the freedom to be who I am and pursue my different interests. I can get as much education as I desire. I have a car that is not only registered but is insured with up-to-date license plates. The FLDS cult made a prison for women and children. The LDS church actively preaches how important and indispensable women are. The code wheel provided many opportunities to anticipate and celebrate getting a correct answer. I didn’t feel like it wore out its welcome, but others might find it tedious to solve so many similar ciphers. How does it all make sense? Brain wash from young age. A woman’s destiny in the FLDS is handed to her... She is assigned in marriage by the prophet who’s told by God the name of her husband-to-be. . Of course, they might be married to much older men, that are already married to many women, and have countless children. At eighteen, she had been married to the prophet Uncle Roy. The prophet is above all, All of us, myself included, believed that Uncle Rulon was the true prophet of God, so we would never dream of criticizing anything he said or did. , and his closest people get the same type of superiority. All are made to believe that a woman could become celestial goddess only if she was married to a man in this life who was worthy of becoming a god after death and only if she behaved herself, so he would choose to do so. The book is extremely informative if a little dry in the delivery. This is the kind of book that many should be aware of. This is a factual retelling of Carolyn’s life and life in the FLDS ruled by men. There are lots of other unsavoury aspects to the FLDS that Carolyn did not get into as she was tied up trying to look after 8 children in a horrible environment of bullying and abuse. You can certainly read them online. Warren Jeffs would become the prophet and the FLDS took an even more extreme turn which was supposed to work out well for Warren and his cronies. De boeken van Horrorland doen mij steeds denken aan de Kippenvel serie van vroeger en dat was ook weer met dit deel. Ik denk dan ook dat de jeugdige lezer dit verhaal zeker weer kan waarderen. Het lijkt namelijk alsof je je écht in het gevaarlijke pretpark begeeft. Joehoe, daar is weer een nieuw verhaal van de Horrorland reeks verschenen en dit keer speelt het verhaal zich af in een vreemd, mysterieus attractiepark!

De korte hoofdstukken, het avontuur en de spanning zorgen er in ieder geval voor dat je door dit boek heen vliegt. Absoluut weer een heerlijk verhaal in deze serie als je het mij vraagt! I say prayers today that another Waco isn't on the way as agents surround and seal off the current FLDS compound in Texas.I sat up til 2 A.M. finishing this book. It was an intense experience. It made me grieve for the inequities in my own culture between men and women along with the fear that holds me down.
