The angle grinder is a heavy-duty tool that uses a rotating wheel to grind, sand, or cut larger materials. They both have a place in your toolbag, so let’s take a deep dive into the differences, uses, cost and safety factors, and look at a couple of our favorite models on the market. The main difference here is that instead of a single flat piece, the flap disc is made of multiple layers of overlapping abrasive sheets called flaps. Sometimes these are referred to as flap wheels, although that name is more appropriate for a radial flap wheel that you use on a drill or rotary tool. Flap Disc UsesIf you are working on a material like wood, fiberglass, or soft metal that you could end up scuffing with a regular wire wheel, a paint stripper may be more suitable. Cutting discs are very narrow, resulting in minimal material removal and clean cuts - however this narrowness makes them more fragile than other types of abrasive disc. For this reason, it's important to ensure you're only cutting at 90 degree angles. To determine the appropriate tool to use for your specific project, take a look first at the material and size of the project. Consider the length of time it may take you to complete your task using a smaller tool or if it is possible to use the larger angle grinder. If you need to get into smaller, tighter spaces it is presumed that the die grinder will be most effective. If your task involves a larger area, then the angle grinder is your choice.
