About this deal

While a great deal of care and attention to detail has gone into the creation of the C64 Mini, we can't help but consider the retro console as something of a missed opportunity for fans. The official games for the unit are mostly a mix of Epyx and Hewson C64 games. Games unique to the NTSC or PAL versions are noted below. The C64 comes with 64 games built in (rather appropriately), giving you plenty to play out of the box. The ROM file will also need to be renamed (THEC64-drive8.d64), meaning you can only have one active ROM on your USB drive at any given time. While you can get around this by moving ROMs in and out of a sub folder on your USB drive from your PC, but there's no denying that this is an annoying and limiting hassle. Configuration of the lr-vice core(s) is available from the RetroArch's Core Options menu. A list of available parameters and configuration options is found in the Libretro Core documentation. I really enjoy playing The C64 and can see myself using it regularly going forwards, but I’m also fully conscious that not every modern gamer will.

Impressive features

Paradroid • Pitstop II • Planet of Death • Psychedelia • Ranarama • Robin of the Wood • Silicon Warrior • Skate Crazy • Jumpman • Mega Apocalypse • Mission AD • Monty Mole • Monty on the Run • Nebulus • Netherworld • Nodes of Yesod • Heartland • Herobotix • Highway Encounter • Hover Bovver • Impossible Mission • Impossible Mission II • IO • Iridis Alpha • It all looks authentic enough on the outside, then, but inside is a different matter. This isn’t some sort of FPGA recreation of the original Commodore 64’s internal workings like you’d get from a company like Analogue: instead, it’s essentially running an emulator, much like the Capcom Home Arcade and all the other mini consoles you’ll find on the market.

There exist multiple versions of the C64DTV. DTV1 ( NTSC television type) comes with 2 MB ROM. It first appeared in late 2004 for the American/Canadian market. DTV2 (called C64D2TV sometimes) is a revised version for the European and world markets ( PAL television type) and appeared in late 2005. The ROM has been replaced by flash memory in these devices. However, the DTV2/PAL version suffers from a manufacturing fault, which results in poor colour rendering (the resistors in the R-2R ladder DACs for both the chroma and the luma have been transposed). In the DTV3, a problem with the blitter was fixed. Paradroid • Pitstop II • Planet of Death • Psychedelia (VIC 20) • Ranarama • Robin of the Wood • Silicon Warrior • For a multi disk game, an M3U playlist file can be used to group and change discs from the RetroArch Disc Control interface. When using the standard keyboard mod, the F7 key does not work. There is a workaround, the "Keyboard Twister." [3] Software-modding [ edit ]

However, there’s no denying that it certainly looks the part: this is an impressively accurate recreation, right down to the odd F1-F8 buttons (there are two assigned to each key and you have to hold Shift to type the even-numbered ones). C64DTV in original C64 case". Joco.homeserver.hu. Archived from the original on 2011-07-21 . Retrieved 2011-07-19. If you thought some of the games on the NES Mini had aged poorly over the past three and a half decades, some of these ones are practically prehistoric by comparison. This is the saving grace that should ensure The C64 can still be enjoyed by modern gamers. There’s still a thriving homebrew scene for the original Commodore 64 and a lot of these games were made in recent years, meaning they were designed with modern standards in mind. On the one hand, it's cool that you can load up BASIC and use the C64 Mini as a functioning (albeit limited) computer. On the other hand, its approach to ROM loading, authentic as it may be, feels especially antiquated in 2018. To test it I tried a bunch of different commercial games (which is legally dubious) and homebrew games and they all worked perfectly. Which means one of my childhood favourites, Short Circuit, works a treat Skate Crazy • Speedball 2 • Spindizzy • Steel • Street Sports Baseball • Street Sports Basketball •

ZIP archives will be extracted to a temporary directory, in roms folder. The temporary directory will be removed on exit. Thankfully, the C64 Mini is able to run Commodore 64 ROMs right out of the box via its USB port, however the process of getting these going isn't particularly user-friendly. First, you'll need to acquire said ROMs, which must be the correct file type (.d64) and must also be saved to the root folder of a FAT32 formatted USB drive.Highway Encounter • Hovver Bovver • Impossible Mission • Impossible Mission II • IO • Iridis Alpha • Jumpman • Destroyer • Everyone’s a Wally • Firelord • Galencia • Gateway to Apshai • Gribbly’s Day Out • Gridrunner (VIC 20) • As I’ve stated above, it’s really preferable if you’re old enough to remember this era of gaming, because otherwise it may be difficult to appreciate these games in a modern context.
