About this deal

These two dogs played with the ball until they were lying on the ground exhausted and panting but noticeably happy! Their owners reported that it’s one of the few times they have actually seen their high-energy pups tire out. There are several different types of dog balls, so you may want to choose just one variety that is suitable for your hound or get multiple to vary up the games that you can play. We will talk more about the different varieties a little later in the blog post. In fact, two French Bulldogs from the same litter were the perfect example. One of them loved to push the herding ball around the yard while the other tried to carry it in his mouth a few times before giving up and wandering off. Like all new toys, herding balls should be given under supervision. If you notice your pup using the ball incorrectly, remove it. Don’t worry! Not every toy is going to be perfect for your dog. Why not give your furry friend a

Typically, puppies are seen at 8, 12 and 16 weeks for vaccines and then not again until 6 months for spay/neuter and so the best window of opportunity may be missed with this schedule. I always recommend that puppies also be examined at 5 months of age for a dental development evaluation. If, at this visit, there is concern that the adult mandibular canines are erupting base-narrow, a few weeks of ball therapy may just help the problem resolve without any further intervention. Figure 1: Photographs of a lingually displaced lower left canine tooth in a Labradoodle at 5.5 months of age and then after a month of Ball Therapy. This is just the sort of case that is ideally suited for Ball Therapy in that the jaw length relationship was good and there was a clear path and suitable space to accommodate the crown of the lower canine as it tipped labially. What to Use While the softer surface may be more appealing to some dogs than some of the harder rubber options on our list, it’s also easier to tear. So you’ll want to designate this ball solely for fetch (and not as a chew toy). Orthodontic treatment will also conceal a defect and will not be performed unless the patient is neutered. In addition we have an ethical obligation to inform the Kennel Club of a change in conformation. For these three reasons it is advisable to surgically remove the lower canine teeth as soon as possible to allow maximum time between the surgery and the time the permanent teeth erupt at between 22 and 24 weeks of age. See our file for illustration of removal of deciduous canines. As with any intervention, proper case selection is essential to success. Ball Therapy is intended to help guide the eruption of the lower adult canine teeth in dogs whose jaw-length relationship is normal or close to it. It will not work for dogs with significant class II or class III malocclusions. Also, there must be a clear path from where the lower canines are to where we want them to be and there must be sufficient space to accommodate the crowns of the lower canines in the space between the upper 3rd incisor and upper canine tooth as depicted in the VetDentEdu logo.

Pet parents like that the toy doesn’t require any batteries but do say this option is quite noisy—something to consider if you or your pup is sound sensitive (or you work from home).

Furballz also sports a fuzzy, plush exterior that some dogs love to cuddle. Other dogs may eat the fuzz, so keep an eye on them while playing. The ball should "give" when the pup bites down. The smooth semi-hollow rubber is best. Tennis balls are abrasive and can damage the tooth surface but for a short time may do the job we require. Add a rope, handle, or tail to a dog ball, and what do you get? A projectile! Similar to a handheld ball launcher, this type of toy is ideal for pet parents who want the leverage for a farther throw or want to mix things up with a game of tug-of-war. Figure 7: A large ball in the same model. It is too large and sits on the tips of the lower canines without applying the desired force vector.

They would run alongside the ball with an open mouth, attempting to bite, push or grip the ball with their teeth. Virtually Indestructible Ball was another herding ball that was very similar to the Push-n-Play. The 10-inch model is comparatively priced, and if you are looking for a plug-free plastic herding ball, then this would make a good alternative. It was let down by the 14-inch model because it was considerably more expensive. Herding dogs, in particular, will excitedly play with herding balls for hours at a time. There is a good reason for this…

With near exposure, this protective dentine barrier might be thin and, due to the porous structure of dentine, could have allowed the ingress of bacteria and irritants from the oral cavity, possibly causing pulpitis. The radiographic monitoring of pulp vitality before attempting restoration, as well as long-term monitoring post-operatively, is very important. With radiographic evidence of pulpitis and/or pulp necrosis, the only treatment options to consider would be endodontic treatment or extraction of the affected tooth.Interestingly, the French Bulldog that played with the herding ball also flung her plush toys around the home, then chased after them, which is almost herding behavior.
