First job is to work out what stems will actually fit on to your bike. You’ll need to know your fork’s steerer size and handlebar diameter. Cutting straight to the chase, the pinstripe and crisp CNC vibe is either your thang or it isn’t. Truth be told, even if it is your thang, it may just simply not suit your bike. The swoopy, candy colour, gloss finish of certain carbon frames doesn’t lend itself to being paired with a chunk of lasered alloy. Syncros’s Hixon all-in-one carbon bar and stem looks amazing in a sci-fi way and feels great on the trail but bar fit and accessory mounting are very restrictive and conventional bar and stem combos are lighter and cheaper.

On that note, you can also change your stem length to adjust the reach from the saddle to the handlebar. Personally I have 3 three stems and two bars that I will swap out. My default is a 0 degree rise 60mm stem on a flat 720mm bar, I will swap in a -17 stem for big pedalling days. For more aggressive riding I have a 50mm stem on a small rise 740mm width bar. These swaps change the feel of the bike dramatically and even require a bit of suspension tuning to rebalance the bike. The Giant has a 100mm stem on just now and longer reach bars, you can see with getting a 60mm stem I would get the reach down to 510mm and with compact bars the hoods would be closer too, I think 10mm here and there will be fine, I'm not an inflexible cripple yet...

Old-school bikes had a quill stem. This was an inverted L-shape, with the shaft of the stem slotting down into the top of the fork’s steerer tube, and secured by an expander bolt with an (in most cases) Allen key head at its top. It’s also noteworthy for offering a bit of rise (approximately 6°), which is a welcome and all-too-rare feature on sub-50mm long stems. Secondly, as with Renthal’s handlebars, there is a tiny but noticeable flex apparent when really loading up the front end. Which could be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on your position. There’s a slight amount of torsional flex, especially when really wrenching on the bar, but on a stiff, carbon-framed e-MTB with carbon wheels, a little bit of flex is no bad thing as it improves ride feel. Mountain bike stems are typically around 50-80mm long, while road bike stems are longer, starting at around 80mm and extending to 120mm or longer as the frame size increases. Gravel bike stems typically sit somewhere between the two.

It’s easier to manufacture too, because with a quill stem the steerer tube needs to be threaded, with a screw-on top headset bearing. What to look for with the best mountain bike stems
I’m a regular average sized person though so I fit most bikes in my preferred size without making dramatic changes. I know taller people are more likely to use longer stems for ergonomic purposes and short people might use shorter stems to fit their bikes better.
