Book 12 in the David Raker Series and another interesting case, actually two cases, for missing person person specialist Raker. He also has to deal with the worry about his closest colleague, Healey, who is under arrest in prison and under pressure to tell the police about his and Raker’s activities. Raker is a great character and as always well written and well plotted this was a one day read for me as I had to know! I’m a big David Raker fan and have read all of this authors previous books about as well as a stand alone which introduced Rebekah as a character. In this novel Rebekah and David come together as she hires him to look into her mother’s disappearance. Fiona Murphy walked out on Rebekah, her father and her brothers nearly 40 years earlier when Rebekah was 3. Raker is hired by Rebekah Murphy to find out what happened to her mother, Fiona, who vanished on Boxing Day 1985 as she has recently received a card claiming to be from Fiona. Meanwhile Tom Brenner and his son Leo go into a fairground haunted house and don’t come out. What links the two disappearances? Missing persons stories are a popular trope in crime fiction, as demonstrated so well by this series which has now reached book 12. Tim Weaver ploughs this particular furrow well, with a panache that reminded me of Before She Disappeared by Lisa Gardner. Both feature protagonists obsessively searching for those who are lost, with a compulsion drawn from past tragedy. This is a book with a rather ominous title and a compelling tale to tell. If you’re a David Raker fan, I suggest you grab a copy at the first opportunity. And with his closest ally under arrest and about to reveal some truths of his own, the danger to Raker is coming from all sides... My issue with the Raker books has become the female characters. And I don't mean this in a bad way to Tim Weaver at all. But at a certain point, I realized that all of his female characters are completely interchangeable. On the night Tom Brenner and his nine-year-old son Leo visit the Seven Peaks theme park, they head straight for the ghost house. They go in. But they don't come out.

I would have loved it if she had genuinely walked out on her kids, because that's an interesting mother to write about. I would have loved it if she genuinely resented her children, because that's an interesting woman to write about. When the book ended with a letter from Fiona expressing motherly love (despite her daughter spending decades believing she didn't love her family), I was so bored I skipped it. It seemed as though Fiona was being placed into the stereotype of how mothers are supposed to act, rather than being allowed to flourish into a flawed, but fascinating, three-dimensional figure. In The Last Goodbye, David is hired by Rebekah who's mother upped and left when she was a small child, the other missing case which seems unrelated is a father and son who went into a ghost house and never showed up. Already under great risk due to his past actions, Raker’s latest investigations prove more dangerous than even he could ever envisage, as his search grid unwittingly begins to entwine with perhaps his most vicious foe ever. A relic of a monstrous regime, the poisonous point of a broken spear.
