Oh, and this is based on a true story which I still have to look up but I was intrigued by that as well! What Leszczyńska discovered goes beyond any normal description of horror. Upon arrival, most pregnant women were simply sent to the gas chambers, others were summarily executed. Auschwitz, 1941: It was her father’s job to save the lives of the SS. But she chose to risk everything and save the lives of prisoners. Nazi-occupied Vienna, 1940: An absolutely heartbreaking story—based on devastating real events—about tragedy, friendship and courage in the face of impossible odds. Following the outbreak of war in 1939, Leszczyńska joined the National Armed Forces resistance movement in Łódź.

This book alternates between two different women, Ana and Ester, and through two women initially different and who’s paths cross during times of war, we can see the, and sometimes almost feel the atrocities, hurt, loss, fear, and sadness that occurred to so many innocent people at the hands of the Germans. Through it all however, we can also see bravery, friendship, sacrifice, love, and hope…and know that at the end, those will triumph. a b Simon Caldwell (2015). The moments that have made the greatest impact and understanding on me we’re going to the United States Holocaust Museum in 8th grade, going to what remains of the Dachau Concentration Camp when I was 21, and hearing Samuel Harris, a Holocaust survivor speak to a group of educators at 23. The new film’s director, Stachurska, said: “Life is the greatest gift and we should fight for it in any situation. We all die, but what is important is how we live our lives, and that is what will take with us when we cross the finish line. Iga Bunalska from the Auschwitz Study Group told TFN: “Stanisława Leszczyńska is very important in the history of Auschwitz for many reasons.

Instead, says Stachurska who is her great niece, ‘she focused on doing the work that she was supposed to do.’The film will be directed by Mariusz Malec, known for his drama ‘Man of Wheelchairs’ and the romantic comedy ‘Once Again’. Such people don’t look out for their own wellbeing, but for the wellbeing of others. This is what my aunt did in her life.” Firstly, the writing was a little flat and choppy. There were also a lot of run on sentences happening in Part One which really didn't help me as a reader. I had a hard time trying to immerse myself into the story. Stachurska has already written a best-selling book with the help of Leszkowicz entitled ‘The Midwife of Auschwitz’ from which a documentary was also made. I was surprised if I am honest that so many survived to be reunited as I am certain that heart breakingly this was not true in most cases. This novel consists of a prologue, 36 chapters and an epilogue. The chapters are short to medium in length so possible to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
